The Light Shines Through

19 years ago

Inspired by Stephania's recent post Dusk till Dawn, I thought I would post a little collection of photos illustrating one feature of Bromeliads that I find intriguing. While not strictly a scientific or educational post, it could be considered artistic expression.

Many Bromeliads have a translucent quality to their leaves, revealing an aspect of our plants that we do not normally notice.

{{gwi:441362}}

An appropriately named Vriesea After Glow, glowing in the morning sun.

{{gwi:441364}}

Neoregelia Exotica Velvet hybrid comes alive midmorning.

{{gwi:441366}}

Alcantarea vinicolor loving the full sun.

{{gwi:441368}}

Bands on the spiny Aechmea orlandiana stand out during early afternoon.

{{gwi:441370}}

Group of Neoregelia hybrids animated in afternoon light.

{{gwi:441372}}

And my favorite, Vriesea fosteriana rubra radiates during an evening sun set.

There must be many more aspects of these amazing plants we do not pick up on first glance...why not capture some on camera, and share a little more Bromeliad art.

    Those are some damn nice photos devo. Finest pic I've seen of A. vinicolor. Thanks for sharing!

  • 19 years ago

    The plants do have that hidden beauty indeed, but I think the capture is the talent of the photographer!
    Very nice and thanks for sharing.

  • 19 years ago

    No doubt....Devo, they are definitely magnificent (*_*)!
    But I saw your 'Spiral Aloe' : Aloe polyphylla, one of my most favorite succulent,
    but can't keep here, in hot Bangkok city :(
    That why I keep Dyckia, as they look alike...LOL

    Oh, fabulous photography! That's how all my broms look to my eyes, thanks for capturing the beauty.

    Hey Bob...what is the last pic, a Dyckia ?
    I saw some characteristics of x Dyckcohnia 'Conrard Morton'.

  • 19 years ago

    Hi Stephania,I got this plant last summer from Rare Exotics,and they seem to get their xeric plants from Mexico,but who knows? This one went by the name of 'Dyckia species #3. Thats the only info that I have on it.
    It does resemble x Dyckcohnia'Conrad Morton',which is still waiting for me at Tropiflora,to ship when that deep freeze we're in at present,ever decides to move on.When it gets up into the 30's again,we'll think its 'Hot' out !

    Bob what is the 4th plant in the second group?

  • 19 years ago

    Thanks Devo and Bob I really enjoyed those photos. The type of light and the angle of the shot really makes a difference.The ones where the light is shinihg through the leaves are the best in my opinion.

  • 19 years ago

    HDD,that 4th pic is @ 1 year old plants of Ae.'Foster's Favorite,Favorite'.
    bob

  • 19 years ago

    Bob thanks..outstanding color on that plant. Where did acquire it?

  • 19 years ago

    hdd,I got that one in Feb.'98,as part of a 'Hang 'em High' collection from Tropiflora.Just $6 then,a lot more now,I'll bet.
    The pictured plants are the 3rd generation from the original Mom.I have these two,and sent one to a collector friend in Texas earlier this year.
    (will trade one for a D.'Dakota') ? ;))

    Fantastic photos...!

    Great to see such a range of plants. Bob & HDD...good luck with the trade...
    Lisa, I have not seen your N. Etch-a-Sketch before...is it one of your hybrids....? (maybe a zonata hybrid...?) And that albomarginated mamorata....mmm...I am hoping for an albomarginated correia-araujoi.......no harm in dreaming...

    A couple more photos....

    {{gwi:441430}}

    Neo. Fireball hybrid. These have such a dark leaf in dull light, but with the midday sun they give an effect of flames climbing up the punga.

    {{gwi:441432}}

    And to keep Gonzer's flower photos company....

    Flower spike from Aechmea nudicaulis 'Silver Streak'

    Devo, Etch-a-Sketch is a newly-named cross of punctatissima rubra and pascoaliana. I just sent a shipment of over 100 of my hybrids to Michael Kiehl, which is my first release of many of them, and since he has a much easier time selling named hybrids I promised him I'd name them all first. What a brain-buster that was, but I think the name fits that one pretty well. My next task is to start registering them all.

    Stephania, I haven't got a name for the Ae. correia-araujoi x Bert yet. I do have some names in mind, but the problem is that I have 4 different clones and they look pretty similar, in fact I kind of lost track of which one is which! ;-) They all look great with the sun shining through them, though. Did you notice that the pattern is the reverse on the underside as it is on the upper side of the leaf? The light colored portion on one side almost perfectly corresponds with the dark colored portion on the other side, but there's a little translucent margin around each dark blotch. I think this not only acts as camouflage for these types of plants in the forest canopy, but I read it is also a way of trapping what light there is inside the leaf for photosynthesis. I'm not sure exactly how this works, but it is fascinating to look at, like a puzzle.

    So that sound like the Chameleon which I found in Madagascar,
    this creature mimic their body and change to darker color to absorb sunlight.

  • 19 years ago

    Lisa
    All these photos are terrific,but I keep going back to your Ae.correia-araujoi x 'Bert'.....what fantastic patterns and a rainbow of colors to go with it.You must be very proud of that one.
    Bob
    ps: I will trade you one of my $200+ Ae.'FFF' for one,if hdd does'nt bite on my generous offer first. ;)

  • 19 years ago

    LOL Bob..Lisa has a 'Camouflaged Rainbow'

  • 19 years ago

    And one more,as the sun was setting....
    Neo. carchardon 'Tiger'

  • 19 years ago

    thanks to everyone for sharing all the fantastic photos! Lisa, that Ae. c-a x Bert is spectacular! I also really like the Bill. Alaka'i. That's one of the coolest looking sanderiana hybrids I've ever seen! Paul

  • 19 years ago

    Thanks Paul! I'm still waiting for a flower from Alaka'i. It doesn't seem to want to bloom, whereas its sibling, Kumu Hula, has bloomed several times. Nice flower on that one, so I'm hopeful. The cross is sanderiana x Las Manchas.

    Here's an old scanned photo of Kumu Hula:

    {{gwi:441438}}

    This is another pic of the Ae. correia-araujoi x Bert cross. There's at least 2 different clones shown here, I don't remember which one the original picture showed.

    {{gwi:441440}}

    And then I also crossed correia-araujoi with orlandiana, which is now called Ae. Haiku. Nice black spines on this one! No flower yet, though.
