They are native in our area of Ohio as they are in yours I assume. The native plant group I work with just wintersows them. Put the seed in a pot of soil and leaves it outside for mother nature to take care of. Check out the wintersowing forum here. Their methods give a little more protection. That is helpful since this is a wetland plant and loves water!

Thank you! I wintersowed some other plants, but I will add the buttonbush too. It's supposed to be easy from seed. I have some wet areas that I think it would be happy in. I may also try cuttings like MissSherry has done.

When you sow it, do you surface sow or cover with soil?

How long can I expect the shrub to take before it flowers?
