Still around!

I'm still alive and kicking in case anyone was curious LOL!

Anyhoo....

This past winter-sowing year has been the absolute worst I've ever had! I didn't sow a whole lot of different seed this year, but out of the 13 perennials and 3 shrubs I started I only got:

(2) Baptisia australis (False Blue Indigo)

(1) Sambucus cerulea (Blue ELderberry)

(3) Rosa rugosa

I also finally sowed some Capsicum pubescens (Rocoto)seed in June that I received from John_Showme_USA on the chili forum 7 years ago! Actually had very good results with these so my year wasn't all that bad I guess lol! These particular peppers are a minimum 2 year project here and have to winter in the house.

Plus this spring was so darn rainy and cold that I ended up sowing all my annuals only to later bring the flats back in to germinate. So basically only had about 50% of my annuals actually germinate and finish outside. Most of the tomatoes started outside, but once they were planted out (in the 1st-2nd true leaf stage) I lost them to all the rain and had to start them over. I just barely got to pick a few ripe Cherokee Purple about 1.5 weeks ago and the Martino's Roma started within the last few days.

I had camera issues this year so I didn't get a chance to take too many pictures((sigh)) The one camera that I did take the most pics on just so happens to have a missing USB cord so I can't upload them until I order a replacement for it UGH!!

I've started harvesting seeds over the last month and then last week we were wet and cold and when it wasn't raining it was windy and cold lol! Today and at least through Wednesday it will be back in the 70's and 40's-50's at night...time to take advantage of the dry sunny weather as I fear it won't be lasting long! For starters, I need to get a bed ready to plant garlic in today. A friend gave me some hardneck garlic from his garden last year and I planted it out in October and harvested in July. I get to double what we planted last year and need to make more room. I have fall Purple Podded Grey Sugar Peas going that I got from this lady who hired my DH to paint her house. They are an heirloom and are supposed to have red, violet and pink flowers! I'm so hoping I have plenty of time yet to get some seeds from these!! I do still have plenty seed left, but would like some current years seeds for trades :)

Well I've rambled long enough and daylight's burning!

Happy Fall,

Vera

Hi Vera!! So nice to hear from you. I was wondering where you had gone but I see you were busy with a year like I had last year. I must say that this year has been altogether different here and we had a summer like we have not seen in a long time - perfect!!

Let's put it this way... Next year has got to be better for you. All the best!

Hey girlfriend! Good to hear from you.

I also had my worst ever results from wintersowing. I did get a few nice plants. And my tomatoes (wintersown) have done well. We're getting sick of tomatoes!

We had a cool, wet spring, followed by a hot summer with what is probably our worst drought ever. And it was so HOT!
Almost everything in my yard is fried. Even my lavender bit the dust. Yvonne's salvia is pathetic... I could go on and on, but I'll spare you. The only part of my yard that did really well was my cutting-grown coleus in my shady front yard.

    Don't be a stranger, Vera.

Your bed is so super gorgeous! Such beautiful varieties

I quite agree! It's super super gorgeous! I would like to plant that kind of setup. If you have an extra time, please name each for me. :)

Thanks for sharing Karen! I really love it!!!

I actually know the name of almost every one of those babies.

Hi Vera, nice to see a post from you. I don't know if you realize it but someone posted on the Conversation side looking for you awhile back. Sorry to hear about the growing season you've had. We had one like that about 3 years ago. It was like a lost summer. This year we've had the opposite, 23 days of temps over 90 degrees instead of our usual 14. Very little rain. I have quite a bit of burned up foliage. I was looking around this weekend, thinking I wish we'd have an early hard frost and the poor garden could just go to sleep for the year and try again next year. [g] There's always next year!

Vera, welcome back, may you be here more often, and hopefully you find the cord before your order another one, instead of right afterwards ;-O

    Vera,

FYI, I lost the cord to my camera too. What I use now is a memory stick/USB stick. Works great and you can store photos on it. I actually use it a lot for Garden Club meetings and tomorrow night I'm doing a presentation on raising Monarchs and creating butterfly habitats at another local garden club. All my info is on the 'stick' which makes things really easy. I also have a bit of info on there stored for winter sowing presentations. :O) Easily transferred to Photobucket or other photo sites.

Hey, Vera! So good to see you!
    Been missing you.
FYI: You can use any cord with a UB port. My son uses mine with his camera all the time.

Karen....that is absolutely beautiful. Man, oh man...why do you have to live so far? When I saw that picture, I thought, hot dikerdy..I want cuttings of those coleus!
I am hoping to catch the gardeners when they come pull the plants next door to my work. There are a bunch of coleus and potato vines that I want. :-P

    Hi ya'll!

First...I do have another camera cord, but the end that plugs in is a different shape and size.
Karen...That bed is gorgeous!! I've always loved Coleus and mine do lots better grown as houseplants. I even get seeds from indoor grown plants LOL! I know they have a "sun series" but haven't bothered trying. Sorry you lost your Lavender...not sure why they didn't live through the drought and heat, unless they weren't established. Mine laugh at drought and heat! If you want me to send your some seed(or babies next spring) let me know...

Mmmm just finished filling leftover commercial pickle juice with sliced up cucumbers from the garden. In a week or two, we'll have some yummy refrigerator pickles :)) My cuck's actually did really well for a change....I grew Cucumber 'Homemade Pickle' this year.

Vera, I tried the versa coleus seeds, supposed to be sun tolerant. Well, they didn't tolerate my hot sun at all. Probably won't grow them again.

My lavenders were well established, 3 or 4 years old. They were pretty in spring - early summer

    ...then they just died.

Nice to hear about your gardening year, Vera. I understand about camera issues as mine hasn't been working and hate to ask DH to take photos with his very nice camera too often. Here's to a better photo year for both of us next year.

Karen, those lavender look so beautiful, so sad that they dried up. Any chance they might still come back next spring?
