OT Quirky

Does anyone else just love to pop impatients? My son was out last night and I even made him try one. Then I had my husband try it. I just find it amazing!!!! God is so inventive.

My first experience with them this year. It scared the pee-wadden out of me the first time they popped in my hand! Then I had everyone in the house do it without telling them what it did. Quite funny!

I've never experienced it. Is it the seed pod that "pops?" I haven't grown impatiens because I've mostly done perennials. I guess I'll have to add some more to my list!

Yes! They are so fun. Docmom, the pod *pops*, and curls and the seeds go everywhere. I have tons of balsam impatients if anyone would like some.

Hmm, I have no idea of what anyone is talking about, lol! Do you mean you pop the seed heads? I don't think I've ever even seen the seed heads, actually...

Funny, though, now that I think about it, I have an area with a huge swath of jewel weed, which I believe is a type of impatiens, is it not? And often, when I'm pulling it out by the handfuls, I get hit in the face and arms with...*something* - not quite sure what, lol! At first it kind of surprised me, but then I figured it was just the seeds popping out.

Never knew you could do this with *regular* impatiens - and to be honest, I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to go about it, lol!

Hey etravia, if you have some to spare, I would take you up on the offer of seeds! sending you an email.

diggerdee, yes, I think the "regular" impatiens are the most fun to pop. They really sling those seeds. Look for the seed head that is to the shape of a shell macaroni noodle. If you barely touch it, it explodes, sending seeds everywhere. I usually buy 500 to 800 impatien seeds every year but thanks to the seed swaps I've learned to harvest!
