Dat Pot Question

Some of you know what a garbage picker I am, always scouting lol. Well, this morning after dropping one of my kids at school I drove past the YMCA like I always do, and it's recycling day :)

They had out a bunch of laundry detergent buckets. So me being me, I pulled in the parking lot, waited till traffic slowed down, lol..jumped out n threw em in the back of the truck. My thought was I could use these for the dats. Rinse em out real good, Put some drainage holes in em, sink em in the ground and whala! don't need to buy pots. I am wondering though if they are big enough.

Karma, you had said 3-5 gallon pots would be good. These buckets have 12" diameter and are 13" deep. The bottom says "16 liters", If I am figuring correctly, they are aprox 4 gallons? 1 gallon is 3.7something liters? correct me if I'm wrong. I don't know if that's just the amount of the deterg that was in it or if thats how much the bucket can actually hold. The front says it weighed 40 lbs..not that that matters. They do not taper at all..straight sides. Do you think these will be big enough to give the dats enough root space to reach their full potential? Or should I use these for something else and still keep looking for bigger "pots"?

If they are a good size, you all can bet your butts I'll be checkin out their recycling every week, well I prob still will, could always use em for other plants. Why buy a pot if it's just gonna be sunk into the ground? Looks don't matter there!

Thanks!

Daniella

It's not Karma but that sounds like a good size. Why are you sinking pots of daturas? Why don't you just allow them to grow in the ground as an annual? I could see using them for sinking brugs. These would work well for sinking since you don't need to seal up the bottom drainage holes. Just cut some drainage holes in the sides of the buckets for the roots to grow through. It makes lifting them very easy. You can just slice the roots with a spade when you dig them up and not have to dig too deep.

karyn1, you are getting as good as karma, so answer away!!
These will work perfectly and I'm not one after seeing the Daturas in pots above the ground to grow them that way unless they are the Ballerina ones that are for pots and smaller spaces. Either Brugmansia or Daturas in this case would work. Even Cat litter containers are great if you don't mind and do recycle but do clean them out really good with bleach and hot water. We grew 2 Daturas in five gallon pots just to see what these would do and I'm not impressed with growing them above in pots. Sink them if you know these area annuals and they will do better that way getting what they need from the soil.

Karyn1 is right about the side drainage holes, these are needed if sinking. We had a Cypress tree that found the side holes and decided to kill the Brugmansia as it wanted all that it was getting!!

    Thanks Ladies!
Well, actually I dont remember right now why I wanted to sink them, lol. I think it had something to do with the roots? I have another post from about a month ago "dat root space question", I think, where I asked what size pots would be good for them, and Karma had said 3-5. Right now my brain is swamped, & I cant remember anything.. trying to cook dinner, clean and I have to leave to go to HD in 10 mins if I wanna make it outta there in time to pick up the kids.
I think another reason is that I am not sure where I want them, so if they are in pots, I can play around and find a good spot, then sink them.
I def will do the side holes.
These would also be good for brugs? I thought they would be too small? I want my brugs to get as big as possible. I assumed that even a 5 gallon would be too small for them to reach max size. I guess for the first year it would be ok? They wont grow big the first year? Then i can bring them inside in the fall in those buckets for the winter, then in spring transplant to a bigger container for their 2nd year?

daniellalell, after many years of huge pots, we are headed back to the smaller ones due to a recent back injury. I can no longer do the huge pots. All ours will go into the buckets and them sunk into the larger pots that will site above ground due to the high water table here. I have no other option at this point due to the numbers of homes we now have around us. I have found the more they are root bound the more they tend to take off?

That's good news, Karma. I can get plenty of those buckets from hubby the carpenter.

O Karma, I WISH I had that many!! If all goes well, I will. I am thinking about asking around at dif businesses if they can hold their buckets for me, and I'll pick em up every 2 weeks or so.
Karma, who's back? Your back? Everything alright?
Theresa, your lucky, you can just get em from DH!! My hubby works for the sewer dept..even if they had buckets there, I wouldnt want em, lmao!!

daniellalell, that many buckets? As some of the restaurants, bread makers, home contractors, even some of the paint companies have these. I found a guy on Craigslist that hand these so I got what he had. Right now these are stacked on our back fence to give is some badly needed privacy. As for the back, yes it was mine and to take a header off a 6 foot retaining wall backwards isn't my idea of fun at my age!!

For my 2nd yr brugs and older I do use big pots if they aren't being sunk, 15-30 gallon containers. If I'm sinking them a 5 gallon pot is fine because the roots will grow out of it. I don't move the big pots myself. I get DH and the guys that work for us at the farm to move them. I've already had a number of spine surgeries and do more then I should to begin with. I get "the talk" from my neurosurgeon and pain specialist every 3 months. lol

I have so many extra pots at the farm. If anybody needs them let me know. If you need more then a few it's worth it because shipping isn't that much. If you only need a few then the shipping might not be worth it. There's thousands of nursery pots stacked between the greenhouses.

holey moley Karyn, thats alotta pots!!! I wish you were closer, I'd take you up on that and drive out to pick some up! I just can't spend any money right now, thank you but I think I'll just stick with the buckets out for garbage right now, lol. WHat's up with those plants growin in those pots in front of the pile? Your not junkin em are ya? Good lookin dog ya got there!
Craigslist is a good idea Karma..I'm gonna have to check that out..o and I just remebered about freecycle also. Ever check that out?
Geez, what's with you two and your backs, lol. Sorry to hear about that. I's be the same way Karyn, I wouldnt be able to stop, and I'd probably be pushin my limits as well. Even when I was pregnant, I never let that stop me from doing anything. Karma..if you wanna have sex outside, ya dont do it up on a wall!! LMAO!! Seriously though, thank god it wasn't worse.
I can't trust hubby to help me with my stuff..he's just not careful enough. And honestly, I don't like anyone helping me with anything. I'd rather do it myself my way, and if something gets screwed up I only have myself to blame.

That's Bailey, she's a sweetie and loves going to the farm. The property next to us is a stable and she runs with the horses along the fenceline. Besides that often I'm working at the farm by myself and I like having her there with me because anybody can just drive up. She's intimidating looking but is such a marshmallow. lol What plants are you talking about? The only thing I see in and around the pots are weeds.

LOL, You are right Karyn..I was talking about the middle pic..when I just zoomed in I could tell they weren't in the pots, but behind them.
I just keep thinkin how my hubby complains about all my nursery pots I have stacked up, and it's absolutely nothing compared to yours, but the biggest I have are 3 gallons, and I only have a few of those. I save every pot from every plant I buy.
Good thinking to take Bailey with you, so many friggin nuts around these days.

Sorry to hear about the back problems KHT and Karyn. I know how you feel. Mine is neck and shoulder but restricts me more than I like when it comes to digging and lifting. I do it anyway but pay for it afterwards. Daniella if they build anything new keep an eye out for when they put in the landscaping. I got some huge pots for free from the new Walgreens they built when they put the trees in. You can also check with a local nursery. They will sometimes give you used pots if you shop there regularly. I scored 2 pretty terra cotta pots off the curb set out for trash on my way home from work tonight, lol. They are sort of bowl shaped and I'm gonna clean them good and put my desert roses in them. I love free stuff, lol.

    Nice find Kristy!!
I have been regualrly watching a few lots around here where there is construction. And a new walmart is being built about 5 mins away, so I should be watching there too. I havent seen anything there, I think they throw their stuff in the dumpsters too fast. I should ask at the local hardware store down the street. I do shop there often in spring, summer & fall for plants. So much so that last summer for my bday the owner gave me a bunch of free knockout roses, and some other plants.
Still have to check out craigslist n freecycle.
