Bugs

16 years ago

Here is a pic of a rooted cutting of mine that has some sort of bugs. Can anyone identify? I have about 12 varieties that have these bugs and a few more nearby which surprisingly have not attracted them. Maybe some varieties of Brugs taste better than others. The bugs have also traveled to my Passiflora and even to a few of my crinums. There seems to be white ones along with the bigger darker ones. Maybe one type is eating the other or the smaller ones are babies of the bigger ones. Any ideas on how to beat these? I squirted these plants with a heavy dose of Sevin after my Palmolive dish water didn't do anything to control these buggers. I then had dead bugs all over the plant and washed them completely. These pics are one month later. At this point I repeated that process but am already seeing the bugs appear again.

One nice thing about these bugs is that it gave me an opportunity to test my macro on my camera. I am impressed... It is a Samsung if anyone cared to know :)

I know this is the Brug board but you all are my favs, so I will include a few more additions to this post.

Here are my Epis... I cannot wait to see them bloom. I have four types in this pot and that stem that is touching the ceiling grew over 18 inches this winter.

Here is a pic of my most recent Hoya purchase... Chelsea

Here is a pic of my favorite variety of canna that I received this past year. I actually orders cannas by the pound last year. I purchased 80lbs of them lol.

Here is a Hoya I ran into at work and the cuttings that have rooted from it. I was impressed by the size.

Here is a Forsythia that I planted in my neibors yard. I think they may of killed it. I will have to check it out next spring.

Thanks for looking and the responses.

    Nice pics, David, beautiful plants. Sorry I can't help you with the bugs.
    We had a hedge of forsythias when I lived in Austria. They all looked dead like your neighbors during the winter, but always came back in the spring. It is a little strange (to me) that the leaves stayed on and shriveled up. I think our leaves all fell off.

    Looks like aphids and MORE aphids!! You've got to wash
    that whole plant and/or strip all the leaves. Someone that
    knows a bit more than I will respond...I'm sure.
    Good luck.

    Ingrid, thanks for the comment. I had 2 Forsythia and the one I planted at the neighbors looks like that and mine is leaveless at this time which I know to be normal. I am eager to see how theirs looks this spring.

    Since all my infected plants are in my garage and my sprays and washes haven't worked super yet... Is there some sort of fumigation that I can do to kill these bugs? It would be awesome to have some sort of once and done type of treatment. Anyone know if Palms are susceptable to aphids? If so then I would rather chance the elements and put my Palms outside(I have lots of Trachycarpus Fortunei which are pretty cold hardy).

    Thanks for the id on the bugs Pearlgirl. Do you have problems with them where you live in VA? I reside in central VA in Fredericksburg.

    Here are a few pics to add for the heck of it :+)

    Here is a Crowm of Thorns that is blooming - for Lucy - It seems all my Yellows are blooming now - This is Euphorbia milli longifolia - My other yellows that are in bloom are E.M.Sakarahaensis x Cremersii and E.M.Moratii F2
    {{gwi:447870}}

    Here is Hoya Bilobata in bloom - AKA DS-70 - It smells like Butterscotch in my computer room every night. I love Hoyas... They smell purdy :)
    {{gwi:447872}}

    This one is not pretty but is my most recent online purchase. This is Alluaudia Montagnacii. It looks very dangerous to touch.
    {{gwi:447874}}

    Here is E.Viguieri Capuroniana who also looks menacing. It reminds me of some sort of medieval weapon - spiked club :)

    My non fur babies.

    My TX Red Yucca probably one of my favs in any of my gardens. Very cold hardy so if you live North you should try this since it is kinda rare up here and very reliable.
    {{gwi:447880}}

    Here is my Toad Lily garden. I have a Raspberry and Blueberry.

    My Fur baby in my Banana Tree pot trying to be cute right before I sent her outside to cleanup.

    I figured I would post these for ids here and the id board. THe first 2 picks are the same plant and the third is another which is supposedly rare and when in bloom looks like a Yellow lady and man dancing.

    And I know you all love flowers so here is a closing shot. This is some sort of Gazania. Not hardy here in VA as I am finding out in my tests(I kinda suspected).

    I am pretty way off topic by now but we all love plants so I figured that I would share. Hope everybodies year has started off great.

    Aphids. Palms do get aphids but they aren't a huge problem for them, usually smaller palms or on the fruit. I've never seen a big palm with a heavy infestation.

    I love Aluaudia monagnacii, I've had one for ages, went to a nursery in Houston and he has some that are enormous! I need to give mine a bigger pot and lots more room lol!

    I don't even try to fight aphids any more. They love the hoya flowers and I just squash them on the blooms, the scent from the squished ones is supposed to scare away the others, yeah, right.

    I like that thought Tally :) squish them and leave the remains to scare off the others. How big is your A.Mon... I plan on watching it grow a year or so then beheading it to promote some branching. I saw another online that had that done to it everyother year and by the time it was 8-10 years old it was pretty amazing.

    I will try to do some creative pest control on one of my Hoyas. And once I find something that works I will let everyone here know.

    Aphids, Mites, Mealies oh my!!!!

    White flies, stinkbugs, skeeters, snails, slugs....the joys of gardening.

    I've got 2, one is around 2' and the other is slightly longer, it hangs on the backdeck. Cactus King had some that were growing straight up and were well over 10' tall and had branches trailing all over the place. I love spiney thingeys.

    peanut
    that is exactly what I do for aphids, just squash them and leave the remains, I am not sure if it really scares away the other creepers, but it is VERY satisfying! I usually get them spring and early summer, they love the tender new buds and leaf. I have tried poison, washing, but in the end the heat or cold is what usually gets them! BTW love the lizzards! What kind are they? are they really pets or just friendly neighbors? I have a couple of anoles that visit my yard and II enjoy them very much! Also many thanks for the picks of trout lily, I have seen the flower but never the plant, now I know it is something I want to grow!

    Have a great evening
