Bromeliad genetics...

So there is a ton of genetic research going on...

How many people have switched over to the new subfamilies? Instead of the traditional three (Tillandsioideae, Pitcairnioideae, and Bromelioideae) Pitcairnioideae has been split with the creation of 4 new subfamilies (for a total of 7 now):

Brocchinioideae (the oldest/most primitive group)

Lindmanioideae

Hechtioideae

and Puyoideae

Hechtia branched off long before the South American terrestrials. My gut says that there are subgenera in this group (some are perfect flowers, some are lateral vs. terminal bloomers, vastly different leaf morphologies, etc) that no one has cared about.

Puyoideae subfamily is most closely related to the Bromelioideae (the 'youngest' or most modern group). Did you expect that?

Quesnelia has 2 or 3 subgenera that are a sloppy mess with Aechmeas (a mess on their own) and Billbergias. But the whole Bromelioideae subfamily is so young that it is tough to get clean and clear results.

Puyoideae have two or possibly three subgenera, but no one has cared much enough about the 200 or so species to even look into it until recently. The original subgenera are Puya and Puyopsis. 8 Puya species were put in the Puya subgenus with the rest all pushed into Puyopsis. Seems a bit over simplified, eh?
