Where did you see this butterfly? It looks to be some type of leafwing, but not one of our locals. Did you see this at a butterfly house where they exhibit tropical butterflies?

This is a nymphalid of the genus Kallima. It could be African or Asian. Some common names include "Indian Deadleaf", "Oak Deadleaf". "Leaf butterfly" seems to be in wider use than "leafwing".

Yes, our conservatory has a butterfly show every year and they release butterflies in one of the wings of the building. They can fly all around among the plants and flowers displayed there. Sometimes they have had a "cage" in the middle with butterflies that need to be contained and separated from the others. They are all really neat to see and they will land on your hand. The kids have a ball there. Of course there is supervision so the butterflies are not harmed.
