Chris - I have occasionally seen other bromeliads do that after extreme stress. I think it's Mother Nature's way of perpetuating her species for posterity, under dire circumstances. M.N. is so clever!

Nice, can't complain about that! I love when finding pleasant surprises like that. A couple of times I've broken off a vriesea or tillandsia pup and they have kept growing and filled back in...but those have the benefit of the mother still being healthy. This is definitely more surprising.
