Kylie, the only one off your list I've grown is Cherokee Purple and I'd grow it again- it's a good one. I just checked and unfortunantly the guy I used to get my heirloom tomato seeds from isn't selling on ebay anymore. Used to get good variety packs from him... But anyway, another good one is Hawaiian Pineapple. Very sweet. Both of these held up and produced well in the heat here.

Hi, Chena...funny you should mention TOMATOES!! I usually
plant a few around the garden among my flowers for eating
and a few in a raised bed. Larry always enjoy eating the
cherry ones when he's out mowing the lawn. I want to try
the black cherry this year. Also I can a few for sauce...
so...I'm wanting to plant a couple of the high-yielders.
    Any suggestions??

Kylie, I've grown Black Krim and Cherokee Purple, but didn't save seeds. They did o.k. as far as producing, but not spectacular although very good tasting! I get the six-packs of heirloom tomatoes from a nursery near me, not seeds.

Margaret, I always have high yield with the Roma tomatoes and also a yellow one, but forgot its name. I just slice the extras in half, put them in a large baggie and freeze.

Kylie I haven't tried growing any of those but I want to try either cherokee purple or black krim this year too. I don't even eat tomatoes but I like to read which ones people like and grow them for the people in my family that do, LOL. Red Brandywine always seems to be a favorite on forums but I never tried it.

I grew Pink Accordian last year. Old German & Big Boy are some I have grown int he past. I usually grow Roma for sauce, cherry tomatoes (Sweet Million last year), Pineapple, Mr Stripey, something yellow, Better Boy, Big or Better Girl, Brandywine, Rutgers or something to can & some kind of oxheart. There are more that I can't think of offhand. I never realized I did so many kinds. I love the cherry ones & I stand & eat them in the garden. I want to try white, yellow & orange cherries this year too.

Have you ever taken bites out of them & tossed them into the compost just so you don't have to take them inside & do something with them? Usually the end of summer when you can't give them away for love or money & the neighbors avoid you & hide when they see you coming with a basket of something. LOL

Here is a link that might be useful: Free 6 pack tomatoe seeds

Linda I would LOVE to be your neighbor lol
The spring tomatoes I planted last year from seed and a few bought ones, hit the heat and did not do anything for me at all. Maybe I got a couple. Then I did the fall planting with 4 or so plants I bought...well..ha ha ha the FROST killed my pretty cherries and other nice growing tomatoes. I am always to late lol

So I guess I should start planting those seeds NOW .

    Good luck Kylie

Kylie, actually I get the Roma in six-packs, but the heirloom are in 4" pots under $2. I always check that there are more than one seedling in the pot! Don't know if this would work for you; the individual tomato plants are expensive, but the grouping of seeds (Gary's favorite) sounds reasonable to me: http://www.tomatofest.com/Tomato_Seeds_collections_s/4.htm.

Linda, don't throw them away, freeze them, and when winter comes around you can make sauces, soups, etc., with your frozen tomatoes.

Linda come the end of the season and most are getting scorched we have Tomato fights so they are usually popping up everywhere...LOL mostly cherry ones...

Theresa Thanks for the link... Mine is going out today!!!

Thanks Lucy the luck I will need is getting the beds prepared...LOL

chena, what a list! We grew seeds from what the lady stated was a black russian and well folks turned their noses up to that color tomato.
Theresa, thank you!! I am always wanting to try something different. Last year was the variegated tomatoe with the black russian. I get tired of the same old same old.

Eloise, I don't tie up the freezer space with anything that tastes better (to me anyway) from a can (my own canning, not store-bought). I love the taste of home canned green beans (I have never bought a can) & all the tomatoes are turned into either tomatoes for cooking, spaghetti sauce (I canned a couple hundred quarts last year), salsa, or juice. I'd rather have too many than not enough & I share with everyone but by the end of summer, I don't want to see another tomato much less have to put effort into it. I try to can enough to last a few years & I rotate what I make each year. Year before last was a tomato year but I need more plain this year. Last year was a green bean year (I need more of those too). This year will be a pickle year with dill, bread & butter, pepperoncini & other hots, & pickled beets. I might spend a season concentrating on dried beans. I do jelly any year I have something good but not so much now that the kids are grown. I'll also put up any fruits & sometimes make applesauce & my own pumpkin. I do freeze peppers for frying & some of the most tender, delectable sweet corn that I eat plain without salt or butter. No can can compare to that.

Linda I agree!!! Canned is the way to go. I like Parks Whopper for aot of nice tomato. I made a salad from the one I took out of the GH this week, Yummy!!! I grew Cherokee Purple and liked it alot. I also grew Black Sea Man and it was good.

I took cuttings of my Black Krim and Cherokee Purple this last week. I do have 2 tomatoes on the window sill of Cherokee Purple I am going to try to keep the seeds in case cuttings do not work. I am sure the cuttings will root.

These heirlooms were my straw bale experiment. (modified)

    Jim do you have pic's???
Cherokee Purple and Black Krim I grew a couple of yrs ago and they seemed to deal with the drought and heat...I am scouring mags for the best deal..
    Anyone have a fav seller?
The ones I grew came from a Friend who manages a place called Under The Sun...Not sure they will have them this yr.. She doesn't know till the plants arrive..

Wow Linda, you are so ambitious with all that canning! I've never tried, and know that I never will because it's not necessary here in southern CA. Besides, it wouldn't be worth all that effort as I would be the only one eating them. I did just baked, pureed and froze pumpkin for future pies/empanadas/cookies, but I didn't grow them.

Maybe today I will go to the nursery by my house and see if they have any heirloom tomato seeds and report back.

Thanks Eloise!!! That must be so nice to have such access to seeds and plants this time of yr..
