Freezing time over?

Well guys I just have to post this bad report, I had some brugies, plumerias, hibiscus some cacti, and other plants,I built-made a sort of green house. galvanized pipe glass windows for walls, for the door I used a tarp as well for the roof, everything was great till some cat-cats discovered the entrance!!and they decided to camp out in there, and also leave the tarp open about 2 feet wide, so needless to say My babies don't look good at all, the brugie lost all their leaves turned brown(they were a pretty green) my plumies look dead! but maybe just maybe the damage is not so great and they just might come back.

So sorry Marcie. Hopefully they will come back from the roots (I know the brugs should). If the plumies turn black after a while you will know they were damaged. If you can cut back to where its still green they will branch from there and be ok. Hopefully they didn't freeze all the way. Did you have heat in there? I have had to run a propane heater and an electric heater during that few days we stayed below heating in my greenhouse.

Kristy, thanks for the information on the Plumeria. I was wondering what to do with them. I drove to the coast last Thursday after work, and tried to cover as many plants as I could. I covered the hugh birds of paradise, and the plumeria, but the wind kept on uncovering them. So, I am sure that the plumeria will be turing black. I got up at 4pm, and every hour and kept going outside and recovering them with sheets, but the wind was just so strong. I think I saved about 75% of my plants. The only palms that look like toast are the 30ft royal palms, the cardboard palms, bottle palms, and the alexander palms, but since it rained so hard before the freeze, I am hoping they will come back. I covered the brugmansia, with sheets and then put net lights on top, they all lost their leaves and the tips were frozen, but the rest of the plants seem fine. I cut off the frozen tips off before I left, I hope that was the right thing to do. I also cut off the frozen tip on my papaya( I had it wrapped with a towel, with rubber bands around it and the very top came undone only the tip froze. I hope this was the right thing to do? Barbra

Thank you all for your encouragement, I really apreciate it,tomorrow I will take the time to cut verything back and see what kind of damage my babies suffered.A friend of mine gave me a tip. Go to the furniture place and ask the warehouse people to give you the plastic furniture comes in(its usually thrown away)plastic can be big some are king size matress others not as big but longer and narrower, so I did and as of tomorrow morning I will be picking up some plastic, and with that I will be making another barrier for my plants. Also I will be sprinkling hot pepper powder at the entrance of my "greenhouse". I am going to try and get some cardboard too, for my babies.

Marcie, I hope everything comes back for you, but I was told not to cut my plants back yet, February is the coldest month in Texas. I am going to wait until March to cut my plants back. I will pour superthrive on the roots of the plants that look like they might have froze, this might increase the chances of coming back. Barbra

Oh no Marcie! No pepper for the cats! Cats have been known to scratch their eyes out after getting into it!

Poor kitties were just looking for a nice warm place. They are cold too.

If you use chicken wire over top of the plastic, it will keep it from blowing around & keep the cats out too.

I can sympathize with you. I uncovered all the inground plants the other day and opened the GH's. Everything is mush! My only hope is that some of them will return from the roots.
We had 12 consecutive days below freezing and several dipped down to 16*
    This was Florida!!!!

Marcie, I followed your lead, and cut back my brugmansaia today. We went to Shades of Green Nursery yesterday, and Bob Webster cut back his brugmansia and covered them with mulch. Since he is the expert in San Antonio, I did the same. His nursery had some of the most beautiful stocks, all diffrent shades of purple. Just seeing them, brought a flood of wonderful memories. It was my mothers favorite flower. I guess I forgot how beautiful, and fragrant they were. I could not hold back the tears. It inspired me to do a cottage garden, this year, with all the plants she loved. Barbra,

Linda, did you click on the picture you wanted to post (small box)? Then go to the bottom of photobucket and click on Generate HTML and IMG code. I usually copy the first one and post on the message box here at GW. I like to delete the word center in brackets both at the beginning of the link and at the end. Hope this helps.

Well guys my better half reminded me that I DO have a Pet that happens to be a CAT!!And also he does bring strays for lunch he is an outside cat with house privileges! He normally brings a cat for lunch then a different cat for dinner,my minino(his name)comes inside the house checks the house out and he is ready to go back outside-rain or shine- so it was probably him and his friends camping out on my plants!!GRRR. I did check my plants and they look like they are not too bad(I hope)blak leaves some of the trunks were soft so they got cut.My jasmines look pretty bad,so I also cut them back my geraniums well they are gone,so I cut up to the dirt level the Hibiscus they look o.k. no leaves just sticks, my donkey ears well they are cook! but I did have 2 or 3 babies inside the house my cactis they are completely fried.I will keep my fingers crossed and see if everything comes to life.My pineaple plant looks pretty good. My brugies they look alive but sad no leaves so I watered everything and closed up the tent again!!this time I used some elastic ties so even if the cat(s) manage to get back inside at least the tarp will not stay open that big of a gap.

The Brugs will be fine, one frost will not hurt them, I have some that are in the ground that come back every year and I live in North Carolina. The ones in the greenhouse usually get bit once, they will come back from the roots most of the time at least mine have for 3 years.

Linda! Ya'll were even colder than us! We had about 40 hours below freezing over 3 days. The brugs look terrible.
Along with everything else. I'm hoping some things will come back but it looks bad, bad, bad.
    Tally HO!
