Slim picking's

The pickens are pretty slim around the new place as far as plant varieties to attract leps go, and most of them are in bloom right now. In bloom at the moment: Hesperaloe parviflora, Lantana camara "New Gold" (I think), Chilopsis linearis, Cassia eremophila and Cercidium microphyllum. Few to none of the other plants here would attract leps. Since all I could add plant wise would be patio container plants that would have to be hand watered (water pitcher carried out from the house), I don't think leps will be much of a regular attraction at the new bungalow.

Have seen no hummingbirds or song birds so far, no cottontails, quail or mourning doves either. But it's not completely dead here. Starting at dusk I am getting hoarded by moths for a couple of hours nectaring on the Lantana. Lots of skippers and a few Pierids are coming to the Lantana as well, but not much else, not even to the Desert Willow's (which are normally great nectar plants). Probably doesn't help that the winds have been bad for weeks on end around here (I am getting very tired of wind). But this is ranch country right inside of Las Vegas, so it should be a beacon for wildlife. Guess I'm just spoiled as I had lived on the very border of town and desert ever since I moved here.

It looks like if I want to enjoy nature at all I'm going to have to get well enough to drive to find it. Fine reward for a person who made nature his way of life all of his life. Guess that's just one more thing that I've used up "my turn" at. LOL So guys and gals, there won't be many (any) new lep pictures coming from me unless I can drive somewhere to take them. Maybe this fall.

L.
