Under Lights

I've got a lot of cuttings under lights right now in the basement. They're getting huge. My question is, can I strip all the foliage to reduce their water intake? I'm planning a week long trip soon and won't have anyone to water them while I am gone. If I cut them back, will they survive? Thanks.

I don't think that will make much of a difference. I'd just set them in a tray of water and let them get thoroughly saturated. Are your lights on a timer? If not maybe you can put them near a window. I wouldn't leave the lights on 24/7 because that might dry them out but you don't want them to be without any light.

My lights are on a timer, 12/12 on/off. In another month, I'll bump that to 18/6 to get them ready to move outside.

Even when I leave them overnight in a tray of water, they're dried out within 4-5 days. I know overwatering can be the death of these things, so I don't think I can leave them in a tray while I'm gone. Ugh.

Maybe I need to talk to a neighbor after all. I hate having people wandering through my house when I'm not home.

But you're only going to be gone for one week!
I left for two weeks and my plants were outside on the patio, in pots, in the California heat. They were a little limp when I came back, but perked back up right away.

If your water them thoroughly and use humidity trays under them they should be alright.. They may be a bit nappy looking but leaves come back quickly..They should be fine for a week.. If you let someone else water you are taking a chance of over watering which would be much worse than being a bit to dry.. Cut your timer back ..give them a weeks vacation from growing.GL!
Have a GREAT time on your Vacation!!! Don't forget the pic's!!

Tom, you can remove lots of leaves and it won't hurt them. Go, ............. and have fun!

Thanks Brenda. I'm experimenting with one cutting now. I took all the leaves off and clipped the growing tip back nearly to the stalk I rooted. I'm gonna see what happens over the next couple weeks.

I'm so ready to get these things in the yard.

I meant just saturate them before you leave. Don't leave them sitting in water. They can do quite well with little water as long as the temps aren't high. I only water my cuttings once every couple weeks because they are kept at an average temp of 65 F. I assume you will turn your heat down while you are away. The plants should be fine and even if they are a bit limp when you return they should bounce back after a drink.

Tom, I would not remove any growing tips, take off all the larger, lower leaves, instead. The leaves grow back really fast!

Turn the house temps back to around 55 if you can. They grow slower & use less water.

Thanks. I will be turning the heat down to about 55 when I leave. The wood heater won't be in use in the basement and that does dry them out quickly. I'll strip the leaves as Brenda says, and water them well before I leave. Thanks y'all!

I'd bag the pots up in plastic to lock that moisture in. You can't do this as a habit because of mold but a week shouldn't be much if any of a problem. - Sandy
