problem-bud won't open

Hi all, have all 3 brugs budding and blooming and one has its only blossom hanging straight down for 3 days now refusing to unfurl. I've felt it and it's firm, not rotting, and the plant is perky and wellfed, getting sun. What's up? Anyone else have this happen?

It's winter and inside, they really don't give you the real deal unless these are outside where they truly belong.

KHT, that's true in part, but I can't totally subscribe to that theory for the reason this one flower won't unfurl. Of course we'll see what happens in the next 2 days, but the Cherub has 3 buds that just dropped out of their calyxes which should open in a few days, and the Santa Rosa has one open flower and 6 more that are either dropped down out of their calyxes or about to. I really must take a photo of these when all the blooms open, it's quite a show for February.

TM, I suggest you just leave it alone and will open when and if it is ready. I wouldnt try messing with it, just leave it.
ahh..yeah..ok...where are the pix? I can't wait! I have Santa ROsa...would love to see a pic in bloom..mine kept dropping her buds last summer..waaaahhhh.

I had one do that when they were outside and several of the buds wouldn't split open and drop the skirt like the calyx was too thick. I couldn't stand it and tore a hole in the bottom of one and it dropped normally the ones I didn't help along got so stuffed in there when they finally opened they were deformed and stayed bent up. Don't know what the problem was though. The next flush was normal.

I agree lets see some pics of these bloomers you have!
I'm not sure about your bud not opening. I had a bud that was stuck in the calyx one time and when it finally came out it was deformed. But it sounds like yours is already out of the calyx but it is just not flaring out. I wouldn't worry about it, I'm sure it will straighten out when you can put it outside.

Daniella I am putting in a link so you can see what SR looks like in bloom. It is a nice pink with a nice shape.

Here is a link that might be useful: santa rosa

Oh, I must have missed that part. If they are just taking a while to unfurl its probably just because they are in the house. It took pink perfektion forever to open all the way but on the upside it stayed open for quite a few days longer than normal with no wind pounding it in there in the garage.

My bet is when you were taking it in side it was getting the signal to set buds and at that time it didn't like the move. Again you will not get the real bloom or leaves when these are inside and to some to keep them growing and blooming, is a total waste. But again if you haven't seen it bloom and it's inside why not allow it to do what it's going to do? Feeding this time of year, then moving outside will only do the same? It's all about timing?

I haven't fed mine anymore and I wish I had. I get a lot more blooms in the garage than I do outside because of the cool weather and its so hot here. I'm going to feed my big ones when I move them to the greenhouse this weekend so they can wake up. For those of us in hot climates we have to cheat however we can. I wish I had dug up some of the ones that took forever to grow and didn't bloom til frost. I took cuttings instead now I have to wait all summer for them to grow again.

My SR is one of the ones that froze to the ground. It was 8ft tall. It looks good at the base so I think it will come back- good thing they grow fast.

Well I returned home this afternoon and that silly flower had just begun to unfurl. Now, 3 hours later, it's completely open, releasing fragrance, and beginning to turn peach at the flare. It'll all be peach by tomorrow night. It took about 4 full days for the flower to open after it had completely dropped down from the calyx. I think that's a record, as all the other flowers are taking 2 days, maximum.

I am happy for you that it opened up :-)
