Help! root rot

This is my first time growing plants. I got some cuttings in the fall from a very nice member here, but a few have died after I rooted them (some got mushy before rooting, then some appeared to be thriving with large leaves then got mushy - I guess I watered them too much).

Anyway, recently I had a huge bug problem. On my biggest and best plants, there were numerous black dots on the leaves, but no webs. There are also some small bug of some sort that are slightly bigger than pinpoint, but smaller than aphids, with somewhat yellowish body. I sprinkled on the combination insecticide with fertilizer granules, thinking that maybe my brugs wanted to be fed too now that they have so many big leaves. But that's when I almost killed all of my best ones.

They looked really bad for a while, dropping a bunch of the nice beautiful leaves; all except for one seems to be recovering now. Yesterday, even this one was looking ok, but this morning the green branch wilted at the top, so all the leaves from that branch (the only branch) are dead. I did water it yesterday when I thought the leaves looked limp. I dug it up today, and the bottom of the cutting still looks ok (green). All but about 3-4 roots were shriveled up, and the "good" roots have shriveled up tips too, thought mostly white and plump. The soil was not too wet, just slightly damp, but not damp enough to stick to my fingers. I got rid of as much fertilizer as I could, then repotted it. Should I dust it with a tiny bit of rooting hormone? Will it live?

Please help! I really want these to grow!
