The 2014 Winter Zone Wars officially begins today!! My wife (docmom) has recruited me to keep track of the plantings this year. Each time you post to update your winter sowing progress, please make sure your Zone and current total no. of containers are in your post. This is my first time, so if I miss your information please alert me. The friendly competition goes until May 1, 2014.
Good luck and happy planting.
Dan

Sowed 21 gallon jugs (all flower seeds) this weekend and had to wade through snow over my knees to place them inside the garden fence where they'll be safe from my 2 dogs!

I winter sowed 16 more containers for zone 7. My total is now 70.

    pixie_lou Zone 5
    30 containers today
    145 containers total

I just sowed them in my basement. Carried them upstairs and realized we got a foot of snow last week. So I now need to go outside and shovel an area to put these silly trays.

Done with the perennials. Get to take a break for a couple weeks until it's time to do the annuals.

This is my first attempt at Winter Sowing and I caught the bug! I have 15 jugs out so far for Zone 5.

    55 for zone 6, please.
    thank you!

My first year at winter sowing lots of different seeds. The weather here was warm today so I got 10 milk jugs planted and 8 planters with plastic covering them. Also my first year doing zone wars.

    My total 18 zone 7.

    Happy Gardening!!

First time wintersowing! Can't wait to see how it works and plan on doing more.

7 gallon jugs for zone 6.

I'm up to 9 jugs. First year winter sowing for me. It's been a cold winter so I'll say I'm in zone 5 since I'm on the border of 5b and 6a.

30 more for me in zone 5, making a total of 84.

14 jugs this year so far. Only fill-in plants for me, and later some spring sowing of annuals and veggies... Trying to restrain myself this time around lol...

    7 more jugs for a total of 14 - zone 6

Hi! I planted 4 more jugs today for a total of 10 for me in Zone 4. I still kind of feel like a harebrained gardener putting these babies out in the snowbank! It will seem like magic if anything comes up!

Sowed another 17 jugs today for a total of 37, Zone 5

Didn't get to post it last night but I did 20 more jugs zone 5 for a total of 45. Onesies twosies for the rest of the season....

Hi, put me down for 6 more in Zone 6 for a total of 23. That's it for perennials for me. I'll be doing my annuals and toms at the end of March. My container count goes down every year because I'm running out of room. A lot off these seedlings will go to the local plant swap. Thanks.

On the 15th and 17th I put out a total of 39 more containers for a total of 75. Temps are going up this week, so I'll be hovering over them excitedly every day for signs of my first winter sown sprouts--yay!--and then worrying when they sprout early about them surviving--yay again!

As of 2/19/14 I have a total of 93 jugs for Zone 6. More to come.

    I sowed 69 more for a total of 295 for zone 7.

    I have a total of 141 containers now for zone 6 :)

I winter sowed 7 more for a total of 77 for zone 7.

For zone 6: I sowed another 40 containers for a total of 80. Makin' up for a late start.

    (Rock on Zone 6!)

    57 for zone 6, please.
    total of 112.

    thank you!

My first containers are out - 22 for zone 8a!

Do peas direct sowed into the containers they're to grow in count as winter sowed? If so, I sowed 16 containers this past weekend for a total of 91. Got to get out there and check for sprouts! Going cold again this week, so I figure I better sow the rest of the peas while I'm out there in case the ground freezes back up.

Back--sowed 8 more containers of peas (16 seeds each) for a total of 99 containers. No sprouts yet that I could see. Just as well--I'm not done winter sowing, and not ready to transition to nurturing seedlings yet!

11 more for a total of 21 in Zone 8

Sowed 20 more containers for zone 6. My total = 100.

This is so addicting! I have only been gardening 3.5 years. This is only my second year wintersowing. I have not had much success with seeds in the past (even with WS'ing last year), so I am sowing many to be safe. I am using way more milk jugs this year, too (though, I do have a bunch starting to sprout in the yogurt cups). I hope this keeps me from buying so many clearanced Lowes plants, though the vendors will surely miss me (they know my face way too well!). lol

So, 20% of ones planted before today are sprouting. :) I hope they will be ok! It has been a much colder winter than normal. It has warmed up a lot lately, though. Usually, March and April are pretty mild. They just need to hold on for six more weeks. :)

I planted 15 more today for a total of 319 for zone 7. Not sure if anyone is interested, but I attached pics.

9 more for zone 6 for a total of 23.

Please add 14 more, for a total of 76. Thank you : )

21 more containers for me in zone 5, for a total of 105.

Gotta say, I love winter sowing....but I kind of thought at some point winter would end so the seeds I started could actually sprout. ; ) This is my first year and the anticipation is killing me.

    10 more for zone 6

Sowed 22 containers for Fairfax, VA Zone 7 (but with this year's cold; it is more like zone 6).

I have winter sowed 12 in zone 7a.

Yesterday was a winter sow cramming session. I sowed 177 containers between then and this morning for a total of 294.

Hi Dan, great job! TheyâÂÂve told you, havenâÂÂt they, that a gw thread only holds 150 posts and after that you will need to start a new thread? Some kind of numbering is nice for the different threads of zone wars. Posts were up to 147 when I logged in.

I am so glad you were able to revise the spreadsheet and get the new one posted. Sorry that I never saw your original share request.

You set up a new e-mail address, which is great, but your e-mail from your new e-mail address went to my junk mail folder. I kept looking for e-mail from the address that docmom had given me and never saw it!

I try to send a copy from the e-mail address where someoneâÂÂs expecting me and also from a new e-mail address, and explain, so I do not fall by the wayside. A huge modern day problem! I will wintersow some more and post when the rain finally stops. Ice, snow, rain, what a winter. Thanks!

Zone 6, 25 containers. We started on November 22 and brought some into the greenhouse on Jan 24. Here is some Liatris from Docmom.

Wow great sprouts! Getting a late start this year, please put down 10 containers for me in zone 5.
