Please help by voting!

Hi everyone,

My class is a finalist in the Animal Planet/Discovery Channel Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom How do you ROAR contest. As you know I have been teaching my Kindergartners about Monarchs (and other butterflies) for several years now. We plant loads of Milkweed and have planted two butterfly gardens. Our schoolyard has been certified by both the NWF and MonarchWatch. Now, we are being recognized as a finalist in this awesome contest AND if we win, $5000 can be donated toward a charity of our choice! YES!!

The voting has just begun. Part of the final decision is a People's Choice vote which is done online. If each person here could help out by voting, my class would be SO grateful.

Simply go to http://wildkingdom.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?pageid=10 and scroll down to Jim Thorpe Fundamental School. Click on the dot to cast your vote and enter your email address then click SUBMIT. That's it. The winner will be announced on the June 10th Wild Animal Kingdom Show.

Thanks a million.

Me too! You should add this post to the Cottage forum. Lots of butterfly friendly (and dog friendly) people over there :-)

We're recently on the topic of Sphinx moths.

I'll keep my fingers an toes crossed that your school wins.

Thanks, everyone! I will keep an eye out for places to post this. I noticed that Garden Web has a different butterfly group. hmmm...

I also posted on my Dogster groups as well since Tifanny was known as the Butterfly Dog, after all! :)

Sherry, I just voted for ya too, and I hope so much that you win. If you win, that helps the Monarchs win. Wow, just think what $5000 could do to help them!

Do you know what the last day is that people can vote? I'll ask my birding friends if they would please vote for your school. They know that I'm into butterflies.

Done and done! I assume you've mentioned something over on the MonarchWatch Forums already... but if you haven't... might be a great place to gather some votes! :)

I haven't mentioned anything on MonarchWatch but I did send a note over to Dr. Sonia Altizer... :)

I guess that the Garden Web cross-lists their butterfly stuff. :P

Got emails back from MonarchWatch AND Dr. Altizer's group...

I am so lucky to have such a wonderful, supportive group here. You all ROCK! I have been bragging about y'all... :)

Woo hoo! My birding friends on the songbirdsfamily.com website that I go on are voting for you! I've known some of them for years and even met some, and I just knew that I could count on them! :)

Done sweetie! YOu have been one of my biggest mentors since day 1!

    Thank you all sooooo much!

Someone just mentioned that if you voted on Monday that the votes didn't count. ARGH! The official start date was the 15th which is TUESDAY.

My kids are all so pumped right now. I've got people calling and emailing me from all over. Everyone is so excited. I am just thrilled and tickled to death. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much your support means to me.

    You got my vote.

What wonderful way to recognize schools that create such worthwhile projects. they all sounded great!

If you win, maybe they'll interview you and we can all watch!

I have continued the Monarch Mania momentum with my vote.

The voting is on the honor system since only duplicate (or perhaps very similar) "email" submissions are rejected; good luck Tdog!!

Thanks! My husband said it is too bad there isn't a video of what my classroom looks like...there's so much science we do that it would be perfect for the competition. I told him that I'd actually entered on the spur of the moment so was really most surprised to get that phone call that we were finalists. :) JUST in case we win I have all my ducks in a row with all of the kids' photo releases signed and in hand (got new ones signed Monday night). Now I am getting a final summary written up to be sent in...I do need to get the butterfly garden in the parking lot weeded...ARGH! Oh well...first things first.

I do have a blog set up and have been making changes to it. Perhaps if any of you have time to check it out and give me some feedback? It is a real simple one right now. Like I said, I keep making changes to it.

The "People's Choice" voting will count as 25% of the final tally to determine the winner; this is a significant component!

The blog looks nice, you have chosen a nice monarchy color, somewhat caramel, as a background. The brownish text would stand out better if black and complete the monarch mimicry.

It was a pleasure to vote for you!

    Sherry,
I love your Blog....and still have my fingers crossed for the contest...

Thanks for the comments. I made the change to black lettering...

I re-voted last night - I guess my first vote on Monday didn't count, because they accepted my second one.
    MissSherry

I gave you another vote. Your kids should be very proud whether you win the contest or not.
What you are doing will have lasting effect. I like your idea to make and distribute seed packets to get other people involved. That's the kind of thing that can cause exponential growth since those people can also collect seeds from their plants and share with family and friends. Maybe you could include some basic info about seed saving with the packets.
Best of luck on your class project.

Excellent Blog! I would prove very useful to anyone teaching about monarchs!

Pardon my naive question, how does one create a blog?

You got one more vote for Jim Thorpe Fundamental School,
    good luck.

    Maryann,
I will send you an email privately but it is quite simple. It is actually easier than doing a webpage. :) I have a webpage as well but haven't really done much with THAT. :P

You can go to www.blogger.com and set up a blog.

    Got my vote. Good luck.

I voted again since our Monday votes didn't count, and I want to make DARN SURE you get ALL the votes you need from your friends here! And friends we are indeed. Without you, we wouldn't be spreading (via seeds) near as much Monarch joy as we do!

    Susan

Thanks for the mention about re-voting. My first one was too early. I hope your school wins. But of course let your students know that just having a butterfly garden as cool as the one they have makes them winners already!

Tee-hee! Susan, glad you clarified the 'spreading' since I wouldn't want to be involved in any other type of spreading! Hubby jokes that I am part of the problem with his 'spreading' tummy...too many M&Ms around the house. :P

Yes, that is a 1-gallon pot of Asclepias curassavica that they sell there! Patty, the manager said that she gets around 20 pots a week now. We bought three pots to take home.

Weeellll...your *e-mail address* can only vote once. Out of a sense of fair play, I only voted one out of our four addresses ...

I meant to mention to you, Sherry, that I've been seeing the ads, or public service announcements on Animal Plant for ROAR, and am so thrilled to see you as a finalist in this wonderful program. I've been watching a lot of their spring shows (lots of butterflies and moths have been depicted), and Ruud - I love Ruud because he focuses on lots of different insects, including butterflies and moths.
