I have a possible problem with the above of which I am not very familiar, the last one I had was many years ago.
Presently, the plant has a bloom stalk which I noticed just today has several brown edges on the ends of the bloom and some have extended up to 1/2 of the entire leaf. It's in a partially to mostly shady position in a hanging basket under my porch. Is this something I should be concerned about? The bloom and stalk look good otherwise. Thanks!!!
Is it possible that the ceiling or overhang of your porch is made of pressure treated wood?
If it is, and water runs off any part of that wood and hits parts of your bromeliad, then the copper (from the pressure treating process)is killing your bromeliad. Try moving it to an area where there is no runoff - if that is indeed the case.
You haven't by any chance sprayed the plant with a fungicide containing copper have you?
I believe that exposure to any copper except for the tiniest amounts of trace elements is poisonous to broms.
Finally another thought; the basket is not being hung from copper wire is it? If it is, this could also cause copper residue to enter the basket when it's watered.
Hey Nev, thanks for the further info re copper-had no clue. No, the plant is in a plastic pot that is within a decorative wicker basket-no copper that I am aware of. The bloom was a complete and pleasant surprise, and I am a bit paranoid about losing it. It has been a long while since I have gotten to enjoy one of these. Thanks again!!
