Guerrilla gardening.

You never saw me. I wasn't here.

That was a cute video. I have never heard of guerilla gardening. Love the concept. It would have been nice if he would have gone back during growing season for one quick shot of the results.

I've made them before. They are very useful for some applications but less so for others.

I wouldn't use them in my garden. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but for my garden it's pricey and overkill for something I can do with equal and usually better results by wintersowing.

Now out on the rest of our 15 acres - then they can be very useful. In that area seed balls give a way to ensure scattered seed is in actual contact with soil and it keeps seeds from being eaten or blown away. The best thing about them is that the seed balls will just sit there forever until you finally get a seasonal rainy period that will support germination. Very good in an area that tend to have periodic extended droughts.

In my regular flower beds I'd rather wintersow, get the benefits of early germination, and plant out early. WSing in the container gives the seed ball benefit of protection, but also with more soil and ability to retain moisture. Also more choice in seed and lower cost. And fun to watch the seedlings emerge in their containers - can't miss out on that!

But out on the land the seedballs are perfect for sowing because they'll just stay there until there's enough rain to germinate - even if there's a three year drought between scattering them and finally getting the rains to support plant growth. That's a great way to sow each year without worrying it that year's weather will be able to support germination.

This year I'll be direct sowing seed on the main part of the land because we are having a rare year with near perfect soil moisture. I'll just time my direct sowing of the hardy perennials and annuals so that it's right before a snow so that they get some protection from winds and birds.

But next year I'll likely seed ball a lot of seed - then scatter them all over and let them do their thing in their own time.

The seedballs are really fun to make. :)
