When do seed racks hit the stores ?

I've gotten a few seeds for my first attempt at WS but need a few more.

When do most stores start filling the seed racks ?

Here it seems to be in mid-January for the most part. They have to get it in between Christmas and Valentine's Day, I guess.

I guess it depends on the store. It seems like most stores around here don't stock seeds until pretty late in the game. However, the organic gardening store I go to got there's in a few weeks ago.

You could always order your own off the interweb and not worry about.

I placed yet another order with Value seeds on line yesterday, as their prices really do beat store seed racks, even with shipping. Take a peek over there -especially for perennial seed which usually costs more than annual seed.

I work in a garden center and we already have our first seed rack up. We will get several more in the next few weeks. I love seeing the new racks of seeds. It helps me think that spring is just around the corner. :-)

I had been looking for the seed rack at Walmart... I thought it went up in the Fall. I'll have to keep checking. I need some more annuals.

I did place another order for perennial seeds from Summerhill yesterday... I have to stop doing that!!

WalMArt here puts up their rack when they take Christmas down. Should be around the beginning of January.

Last year I was to eager to get started but all the stores didn't put seeds out until late February or even March. Walmart had them "out" in mid January but the display was still in shrink wrap and shoved in a corner so I could only see one side for weeks. Then they unwrapped it but left it shoved in the corner. An employee saw me trying to wiggle my way around it to get a look and pulled it out for me, and then shoved it back when I was done until March. They had plenty of room to have it out but must have figured no one would want to look at it until spring. I explained to him that people do buy seeds in winter, but apparently he didn't believe me. I was at Home Depot this week though and they had some racks out already! I like to get at them early for wintersowing and also so that the racks are not a mixed up mess yet.

I saw Seed packs for Renee's Garden in a nursery this week. She has the most wonderful of seeds. I grew a pole bean called Spanish Musica this past season and they were AWESOME!

Here is a link that might be useful: Renee's Garden

I was at Lowe's last night with a giftcard, they told me their spring set up will be in place by Jan. 15th. So a bit more waiting.

I was at Attwoods (a farm & home store) yesterday & they had a whole isle set up, but it seems I can get better prices online.

I was at our local Kmart Monday Dec 29 and they already had out a display of Martha Stuart and Burpee seeds, I was SHOCKED, don't know when they usually start cuz I do not shop there (went in for little ceasar's pizza) just happened to decide to walk back to the back near the lawn and garden section to look at marked down Christmas items and viola I ran smack into their display!
YES I looked at them and thought hummm, I SHOULD be getting some of you, wish I could remember what some folks wanted...lol.

The Atwoods here has a huge supply of seeds and
every thing else for the gardener. Lots to choose from.

Lowe's has the Burpee Seeds now.

My local Kmart only has some Burpee and Cook's seeds out so far. I am looking forward to the Martha Stewart seeds soon! I really like those.

Home Depot in Fairfax, VA has Burpee seed rack out.

My local Big R has a few of their seed racks out as well. Mor eto come later in the season I guess. Which I hope comes sooner rather than later.

I work at K-mart and right after taking down the Christmas stuff we put out the seeds. Burpee and Martha Stewert. All 40% off. And the bulbs from last year are all marked down 75%.

It was about the second week of Jan here in NH...thinking WM was lagging behind HD by about a month, but had the racks out (but not unwrapped) like another poster mentioned.
Agway also had them out early. That was way earlier than they had been in previous years, when I don't recall seeing them til March.
    Must be global warming ;)

At menards today and the former Christmas area is shrinking and lo and behold, there was a large Burpee Seed rack.

I looped one hand into my belt and put the other in my pocket and only shot one glance back at those wonderful pictures on the fronts of the packets.

My mind immediately went berserk thinking about warm soil, greenery, little shoots poking up thru the brown earth. Too early for such nonsense. Outside the windchill is below zero, snow is falling sideways and the ground will be frozen for another 3 months.

But wiley, those seeds are the promise of spring. The weather will change. Can't you hear them calling?

Things are looking up already. After all, we're getting about another minute or 2 of daylight added with each passing day. There's a spirit of "hopefulness" in that for me, we're more than halfway through the blind tunnel that is winter.

Our Walmart still had Christmas clearance stuff in the garden area, no seed rack tucked away that I could see. I was hoping to buy some potting mix for WSing. DH was at Lowe's this weekend, and their garden area was filled with plastic tubs for storing holiday decorations, etc. I have a little potting mix, but not near enough, so I hope they put some out soon!

I'm going to Phoenix in mid January. Will your (AZ people) seeds be in the racks then? Maybe I can find a treasure or two to bring back to snowy MN.

    Fran,
After reading your post, I ran to my local K-mart. Spent almost an hour (I think) staring at the display of Martha stewart and cook seeds. Wish they had more but I snagged a few and plan to return to buy some more later, I did get long Island cheese seeds (pumpkin) I've been wanting to try. Thanks for the reprt

I'm ordering online. The seed rack prices this year are ridiculous.

Clumsy: Brace yourself. News is that FedEx and UPS will raise rates 6-7% starting Monday. Prices will most likely go up for seed orders and everything else.

if you are really jonesing - Target put theirs out yesterday - once the xmas is gone out they go....

I was in Enid K Mart yest. the manager said they would not
have seeds untill 1st of Feb.

Lowes had a few out, not many yet.

Atwoods had veg. and flower seeds.
    A lot for 10 cents .

Many seed stores have free shipping on their orders. I plan on using those. Even if shipping weren't free it'll still be cheaper than buying at these inflated prices.

No seeds out at our K-Mart yet.

Your comment made me smile Mohammad. I'm not saying how old I am. lol

BUT even though I've been gardening for a long time, I find the old information on Gardenweb still very valuable and more helpful than the newer articles that are usually not as detailed as I would like them to be.

Also our Menards here had a big rack of seeds when I went to check out their Christmas clearance nearly two weeks ago. They also have large bags of potting soil thankfully not stored outside where it gets wet.
