My new setup

I moved all the cats out of the peanutbutter jars!! It's not as big and nice as some of the ones I've seen here, but working w/ what I have. I'd like to do a screened enclosure outdoors, have everything I need to do it, wood, screws, staples, a roll or screen, just need to talk hubby into letting me.... Anyways, here's the new cage.

I'm using cuttings in bottles, top wrapped in aluminum foil, for the milkweed. And a few that are just wrapped in a wet papertowel and aluminum foil. Hopefully I can move the potted milkweed in there eventually.

Here are the cats enjoying their new home (Well except for dropsy at the bottom, we call him that cause he does that when ever I even moved something on the kitchen counter when they were there. Shortly after the pic was taken he ran up the milkweed and started eating)

My sick guy is still alive, but in the same cage as before, not even in the same room. Still hasn't moved or eaten...

I agree. Nice job!!! The only thing that I would be concerned about is the cage sitting in front of a glass window or door? Glass can reflect alot of heat from the sun, and could possibly cook your caterpillars. Of course, I am from Okla. where the sun gets pretty darn hot!!! If it gets indirect, filtered light, then it may be okay. I would be sure to check that it several times a day, and notice how the sun reflects upon the glass window.

By the way, I see a "future butterfly gardener" in the background of one of the pics. How wonderful!!! :)

I thought they'd be fine in front of the slider, it's on the east side of the house, and that's the walk out basement, so it's also shaded by the retaining walls. But....checking them this morning, the thermometer in there (if it still reads right, it was left in there from my bearded dragon yrs ago) said 95 degrees. I moved them to be safe, but it is 89 degrees outside right now. So I'm not sure if it would've been ok to stay there or not. What do you think?

Just getting into butterfly gardening and was looking back at all the posts. I just planted 16 milkweed plants, 3 butterfly bushes and 2 dill plants in the butterflies new bed. I will be adding a feeder for bananas etc off a tree close by their plants and hoping I'll get some butterflies yet this year. I saw some at the greenhouse but not many at home yet this year.

If I'm ever so lucky to get some catepillars (maybe next year?) I love your setup. So how did this work out for you this year??

midnightgirl- I don't yet, I just set it up Tuesday. So far so good. I have 6 cats in there, I took out the milkweed that was just wrapped in wet papertowel and aluminum foil, it wilted too fast. I didn't have anymore "small mouthed" bottles (I had in there a glass decor bottle and an 8oz glass coke bottle, which works great, my neice left it here, I think I may need to go buy some coke to get more) so I used a couple 20oz plastic pop bottles to hold and water more milkweed. I wrapped the aluminum foil around the top, so no one falls in. I was sitting down there earlier, very quietly watching them. All I could here was munch munch munch!! Quite a nice break from my noisy kids. My biggest concern right now is the sudden size difference between cats. They were all the same size, until just before I moved them in. Now there's 3 large ones, 1 med, 2 smaller, and even though i keep moving them apart, the smallest and the biggest keep ending up on the same plant, sometimes the same leaf! I don't want anyone to get eaten on accident. I have 8 milkweed cuttings in there, so I thought there'd be enough room for all. But they like to move around!
