tomato hornworms

Thanks to whoever answered my question about the butterfly houses. That's sort of what I thought! Next question: My granddaughter and I got some hornworms off my tomato plants and are watching them in a gallon jar. I've read that they make Hawk moths, but that they need to overwinter in the ground. Then I read that if they don't overwinter, they still hatch. Can someone help me with this? I'm very confused!
