Speaking of Neo's, Lisa do you have a picture of Cherry blossom, Big O , Caviar and your other Neo's?

    Most of these have made an appearance here before, in fact I only got around to registering them because I'd posted them here, but I'm getting to it, little by little. I sent all these pics to Uncle D. a while back, but they're not up yet.

    'Blueberry Muffin' (L) and 'Damask Rose' (R):

    {{gwi:465187}}
    'Damask Rose' I never really propagated becuase the markings aren't that strong (it looks better in the picture than in real life). I only registered it because it's a parent of 'Big O':

    {{gwi:485126}}

    'Cherry Blossom':

    {{gwi:503250}}

    'Caviar':

    {{gwi:465189}}

    You already know what 'Blushing Tiger' and 'Ring of Fire' look like. Do you want to see pictures of some of the unregistered ones? I've got plenty! Some named, some not, some I'm selling (locally), others not yet.

    Pics of any of your Neos registered or not.

    Very nice plants Lisa!

  • 18 years ago

    Blueberry muffin looks delicious.

    Please post more.

  • 18 years ago

    Okay, here's a few more.

    First, some named ones. A couple of other "blueberries"--

    'Blueberry Smoothie' (spineless):

    {{gwi:503251}}

    and 'Blueberry Tiger':

    {{gwi:465184}}

    'Anuenue':

    {{gwi:503252}}

    and its sibling, 'Anuenue II':

    {{gwi:503253}}

    'Haole Girl':

    {{gwi:503255}}

    'Drama Queen':

    {{gwi:503257}}

    'Midnight Marble':

    {{gwi:480140}}

    'Lua Pele':

    {{gwi:503259}}

    Then there's a bunch that still don't have names. Feel free to make suggestions, but it's kind of a personal thing, it either feels right or it doesn't.

    Some large ones:

    {{gwi:503260}}

    {{gwi:503261}}

    {{gwi:503262}}

    {{gwi:503263}}

    {{gwi:503264}}

    Medium sized:

    {{gwi:503265}}

    {{gwi:503266}}

    And some little guys:

    {{gwi:503267}}

    {{gwi:503268}}

    {{gwi:503269}}

    {{gwi:503270}}

    There are more, but I don't have good pictures of all of them, and some I'm not sure are worth saving, but I like all of these ones.

  • 18 years ago

    Wow, these are fantastic!

  • 18 years ago

    Lisa,Seeing your collection of hybrids makes me think that my collection should be the one 'culled',and replaced by yours. You may see your plants as Average,whereas we see them as Terrific ! That 3rd one in this post,the deep purple one with the lime dots outgoing from the center,looks like the expanding universe.How about 'Big Bang' for a name ? Love those pics!
    Bob

  • 18 years ago

    WOW!!!!!! I see a few with Grace and pink sensation traits in the named plants. As for the unnamed ones
    1st looks like 'Volcano Fire'
    2nd should diffently have a Universe name (aka milky way andremedia)
    3rd pic 'Kipona Aloha'
    4th almost took on Vreisea look maybe 'Divine madness'
    5th 'hocus pocus'
    6th looks like 'Momona 'Umi Kumaono'
    7th 'Lonely lady'
    8th 'Wild Elf'
    9th 'Burst of spring'
    10th 'Tiger flock'
    11th 'Tiger supreme'

    Thanks, and keep the suggestions coming. When I hear the right name, I'll know! It's funny, some plants practically name themselves, and others are a struggle-- nothing seems quite right.

    hdd, I see you have a Hawaiian dictionary, but I can't quite figure out what you're getting at with that second one. Momona would be a good name for something just by itself, since it has the double meaning of "sweet" and "fat" (you gotta love a language that makes those synonyms!) After that you lost me....

    I do like to use Hawaiian names, but the usage has to be correct (and not too long). I don't want to do to the Hawaiian language what Hummel did to Spanish-- some of his names make me cringe, like 'Hojo Rojo'! :-p

    My grandamother was born and raised on the big island

  • 18 years ago

    Is Neo. 'Midnight Marble' a Neo. 'Midnight' X 'Marble Throat'?

  • 18 years ago

    Just Lovely... You are wonderful at your craft & a great inspiration to a newbie hybridizer. If only I could get one to look like that, WOW! I'd be thrilled! How many hybrids have you made? It must take alot of practice to perfect it as you have, right? Thanks again Lisa for these beautiful pictures... I enjoy all your postings.

  • 18 years ago

    one parent maybe smithii

  • 18 years ago

    'Midnight Marble' reminds me of the {{gwi:503248}}. They're all stunning, but that one would have to be my fave. You should be very proud of your babies!

  • 18 years ago

    BTW, I have no experience whatsoever when it comes to naming plants, but something about that second medium sized one reminds me of a frangipani flower, so I figured I'd throw that out there in case it'll help inspire a name.

  • 18 years ago

    This thread is from last year so they all have names now. The unnamed ones pictured above are, in order: Caramac, Spring Rain, Ikaika, Songlines, Vallenato, Momona, Amada Mía, Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin, Fingerpaint and Golden Boy. Also, Anuenue II has been changed to Rainbow Wahine. There are more, and I'm gradually getting them all registered. Some of these should be showing up on FCBS very shortly.

    Yes Mike, Midnight Marble is Midnight x Marble Throat, in fact I didn't really even name that. I just had the cross written on the tag and someone visiting the nursery saw it and asked if I would sell her one of the "Midnight Marbles", and so a name was born!

    I have no earthly idea how many crosses I've done, twins, because I cull a lot. At least 95% of all Neo seedlings aren't worth keeping. Even many of the non-culls don't really merit names, and eventually get phased out when I get something I like better. A lot of the crosses I made when I was first starting out didn't produce anything good at all. I'm getting a little better at predicting what will work, but it's still a low percentage.

    I can tell you that as of right now I have 182 named cultivars listed in my little black book, with a little less than half of those being Neos, then Bills, Crypts, a few Vrieseas, Aechmeas, other genera and bigenerics. I probably wouldn't even have named all of those if I hadn't promised Michael I would. Out of all of those, there are maybe a dozen that I feel are "finished products".

  • 18 years ago

    So Lisa, why don't you ship to the mainland?

  • 18 years ago

    Because we're not certified and can't get stuff clean enough, John. Anything being shipped out is supposed to be treated, and we've stopped using pesticides because of my husband's illness. Michael has been willing to assume the risk, but we did get a warning notice from Ag, so I don't even know how much more I can send him. We don't want to get slapped with a fine or lose our license. At least he's got a lot of them now, so hopefully he'll be able to build up stock. I really wanted to try and get them to him while I can because I don't know what the future holds or how much longer I'll be able to do what I'm doing. :-(

  • 18 years ago

    Here is a couple photos I took of Lisa's babies
    Java plum pups
    {{gwi:503272}}
    Ruby throat
    {{gwi:503274}}

  • 18 years ago

    Lisa- Don't talk like that here! You're our rock :o) Too bad you couldn't arrange something with another nursery on the island.

  • 18 years ago

    MIDNIGHT MARBLE is OUTSTANDING! That is a shame, you must have a picky inspector. I just took a bunch of Daylilys to be inspected to go to Canada, they looked, but really didn't look that hard. I can't imagine what you could possibly send here that would survive our winters. I know I can't ship to certain states without phytos, but that is sad. I could see where they might not want you sending plants to California, but that just sucks!

  • 18 years ago

    Its odd how some states do...I carried several plants to Florida from Texas in plain site on the plane and no one even inspected them LOL

  • 18 years ago

    HDD- I've actually done the same thing and didn't think twice about it until now. I had a couple Easter lilies that I had as carry on from New York to Florida.

  • 18 years ago

    If i had tried that coming back into Texas without a phyto..they would have been trash canned

  • 18 years ago

    It's hard to know. Sometimes they're very lax and sometimes they'll hunt you down. I just don't want to push it.

    I was talking to someone in Louisiana who had some gingers shipped from the Big Island and they forgot to put the certified stamp on it. He said the inspectors came to his nursery and not only destroyed all of those plants but everything else that was in his greenhouse because he couldn't prove that they were from a certified source either and they apparently figured he was up to something.

    All it takes is one guy who's having a bad day, or a bad life, and you end up paying for it! I've also had seeds interdicted and confiscated because they didn't come with a phyto. I didn't think seeds required a phyto, but I guess they do if they're coming from overseas (in this case South Africa). I also didn't think they'd go into an unmarked envelope LOOKING for them, but again, I guess they do if it's from overseas.

    Hawaii tends to be pretty strict about things coming in. You need a permit and a phyto and you can't have plants sent directly to your home or business, you have to have them sent to the Dept. of Ag. and they'll notify you to come pick them up. I can't keep up with all of the rules and regs for every different location so I tend to be a bit paranoid about the whole process. And that's not even getting into the whole subject of delays and things getting lost in the mail......

  • 18 years ago

    ....and here I sit in the mid west, Lake Eire, infested with zebra mussels, quagga mussels, tube snout and round gobies, spiney water fleas, the ruffe is coming, eurasian milfoil, all from ships ballast water, all having a very negitive impact on our envoirnment. Its costing Millions to keep water pipe intakes open for water treatment, and the nuclear reactors, that supply our electricity, and nothing is being done about it. Oh don't forget the highly contagious disease they brought over last year that killed MILLIONS of fish in Lake Erie, and threatens to shut down family run bait shops because baitfish cannot be transported across state lines in the Great Lakes Region. At the same time there is nothing stopping me from going down to the lake, buying some bait and taking it to any of the inland lakes and infecting them. We trade Channel catfish for steelhead trout fingerlings with Michigan every year, but that may have come to an end and so has Ohios GREAT Steelhead trout stocking program.

    And they're worried about me being able to purchase tropical house plants from Hawii. I wish they would take the time to pull their heads out of their backsides long enough to do something that makes sense for a change.

    Sorry for the rant.....but it felt really good!

  • 18 years ago

    Not to worry John,one day, the atomic radiation fallout will resolve all these nuisance issues.
    B.
    ps; your rant much appreciated.
