My backyard

17 years ago

I managed to cross two plants off my wish list from Olive Trevors the other day -

Neo. Hannibal Lector - I tried to cook him but have since moved him to the shade.

{{gwi:503600}}

Hohenbergia. Correia-araujoi - I don't know how to pronounce it but I like it!

{{gwi:503601}}

I've doubled my xNeophytum collection by picking up xNeophytum.RalphDavis at the last Brom meeting.

{{gwi:503602}}

After five years of neglect my Ananas.Tricolor is rewarding me with a pineapple...

{{gwi:503604}}

I can't wait for this to flower, it is only labelled as Nid. Innocentii cross - its mother had a brilliant pink flower from memory.

{{gwi:503606}}

Does anyone know what this Neo is?

Cheers,

Rick

    Hi Rick,

    Great score with Hannibal. He will take quite a bit of sun eventually. Just sneak it up on him slowly. One of mine enjoys sun until about 12.30pm without any ill effects.

    The only way I am able to get any of Olive's plants is through the department stores, and unfortunately by then they have lost most of their colour :( At any rate, Hannibal and his ilk are not amongst them...

    Your unknown Neo could be Maya? At least it looks remarkably similar to my Maya, although mine did not blush so beautifully.

    Good growing!!

    Regards,
    Shirlene

    Your nid sort of looks like 'Francois Spae'. I've heard that it has both pink and red bracts. Mine is in between.

    Hi Rick

    Your last pic looks like Neo "rosa striata". The name may have changed?

    Cheers

    Yes Rick - comparing your plant to my Rosea Striata it could either be that one, Neo. Nina Rehak or Neo Rosa Delight - all the best, Nev

    Hohenbergia Correia-araujoi is nice plant but hard to grow upright..it usually flops over even grown really hard

  • 17 years ago

    Hi rickta66

    The striated Neo could be any number of plants, should realy check with previous owner but our guess would be N 'Red Romance'. Some of the others mentioned above tend to have wider leafs than your plant as our R R looks very similar and has that characteristic 'bulbus' flower. Good haul with the others.

    Hi Rick,

    You picked up some beauties. I had Hannibal Lector all lined up to buy this last weekend but the grower discovered that it had rotted at the base without him noticing it! Buggar :-((

    Thanks too for the pic of Ralph Davis - I picked him up this weekend - I havent grown these before and now have three - also picked up Firecracker and Gary Hendrix!! You gotta love Brom Show sales tables.....hehehe

    I have a nameless brom very similar to your Striata Rosea?? but the centre flush isnt nearly as good as yours - i sort of moved it around too many times I think but she has a pup that is looking fantastic.

    Hi there Rickta your unknown striated Neo is almost identical to my Boldstreak X Mcwilliamsii.
    It has long and quite narrow leaves compared to many others.

    Nice looking broms you have growing in your backyard .

  • 17 years ago

    Hi Rick - your broms are looking great. My vote for the mystery neo is also Rosea Striata... but I don't know Boldstreak X macwilliamsii, or Red Romance...

    Your nid could be RaRu? Maybe you could post another pic when it's in full flower.

    Did you attend the Stockade Nursery Open Day?

    Shirlene, thanks for the reply about Hannibal - I think the Brisbane sun is too punishing at the moment I'll try and sneak him out next spring.

    Bromadams, thanks for the pic of your Nid, it is similar to the picture in my memory.

    Dennis, Nev, Jaga and crabpot, thanks for the leads on my Neo.

    HDD, I'm glad to hear that Hohenbergia Correia-araujoi flops for you - it did look a lot more upright on the sales table:)

    Von, Hannibal is a great plant if you can find one in good condition I don't think you will be disappointed, I'm told that Ralph Davis goes full red if grown hard, it appears to be a good pupper with my new plants sprouting 3 pups.

    Kerry, Thanks for the replies, I believe that the Stockade open day is this coming weekend - I won't be going I went a little crazy at Olives and it is clashing with a BBQ. I'll try and put a picture of the Nid up when it flowers.

    Cheers,

    Rick

    Hi Nev,

    You could be right, I've since bought a Neo Blake Street Beauty and it does look similar - it's hard to pick off a photo sometimes.

    Cheers,

    Hi everyone.

    Rick - I posted this yesterday but it seems to have vanished?

    I could send you a pup of Neo. 'Boldstreak' x macwilliamsii and then you'll have them both for comparison. Let's know if you want one.

    All the best, Nev
