This is not a cactus, it is a succulent from South Africa called Stapelia, probably Stapelia variegata, one of the more common types. Like a desert cactus, it should be watered sparingly.

He's a very well regarded authority on these plants, who is quite well known among folks who grow these & others as well. He also hosts an annual outing to visit his greenhouse, his collection & picnic with them, which event I'm pleased to be able to attend most years. He & his wife Bea are lovely people & generous hosts who've hosted this event for decades I believe.

Anyway he has the most amazing site, pix & plant collection w/ multiple greenhouses. He also specializes in other succulents (I've bought varied Crassulas & Haworthias from him). He also gave me a couple of my original Hoyas (like my small Curtisii).

I encourage you to look, you likely find the pix alone fascinating 'cause these plants have such unique blooms.
