Here is a link that might be useful: Mammillaria page

I'm right up there with you Jennifer. I feel particularly inadequate trying to name Mammillarias. And looking at pictures for a match makes me feel very uneasy. Your beautiful plant looks a bit like an "expanded form" of my Mamm crucigera.

Thank you both!
Al- I have only a couple Mammillarias that I feel very confident I've ID'd correctly by myself. One of them is plumosa (no-brainer, huh?)

From the picture link, M. huitzilopochtli looks pretty darned close. Would that it were the only one that did!

Thanks again, guys!

First thought seeing your plant...M. huitzilopochtli. Here's mine from the past 2 wks.

I found pix I uploaded when I 1st got this plant...what it looked like in the beginning & the fruits it grew:

Writing huitzilopochtli is hard enough.. Would hate to try pronouncing it!! :-)

Yep! that's Mamm huitzilopochtli alright, they look very similar to mamm crucigera, but that single upright central is a dead give-away.

Thank you all!

Here's a brief history of Neomammillaria. Due to a clash with a genus of algae called Mammillaria, the name was technically invalid. The genus name Neomammillaria was coined to avoid this problem but never became widespread. The algae name never came into general use and was dropped in the early twentieth century, hence the cactus genus Mammillaria could remain as an accepted name.

Neomammillaria is in all ways a synonym for Mammillaria and nobody under the age of about 90 is ever likely to use it :)

I just bought this one myself today! I was surprised to see yours, I have been searching for the name of it. I bought it because it was unusual and had the pretty pink flowers in a circle, so I knew it was some kind of Mamm. I hope you are enjoying it and I will too!
