OT Ginger I.D.

Does anyone know which ginger this is? I posted on the Ginger site, but I am an impatient person and no one has responded, never mind that I just posted it about 2 hours ago, LOL! At one time I thought it might be shampoo, but now I think it could be cardamon because I read shampoo can grow to 9' whereas this has only grown to about 3-4'. The leaves have this very nice, clean scent when touched, but I don't know what cardamon smells like to positively i.d. it.

BTW, I have to move this ginger because some the trees that were shading it were cut down, and this made it too hot for this ginger. I will have some for trade/postage. Thanks.

That looks very similar to all my butterfly ginger foliage but they get to about 6+'. It doesn't look anything like my edible ginger foliage though. I think you'll have to wait until it blooms for a positive ID.

Eloise: Funny you posted re ginger. I just picked some up at the super market to try to plant. Have never grown flowering ginger, so if any pieces left please add me to your list. Hope all is well with you. Regards, Gloria

Gloria the edible kind from the grocery doesn't bloom but it's a pretty plant and has a wonderful scent. I was at the Korean market today and picked up some whole fresh ginsing roots that I'm going to try and grow.

It totally sucks sometimes living in the country.. I have no access to anything.. Okay maybe the feed store..WOOHOO!! I would have to drive over an hour to find any type of Asian store.. BTW Karyn thanks for the Lemon Grass ..It is doing wonderful and I love to cook with it...even tho I hate to cook!!!LOL Be sure to let me know if you can get the Ginsing going I would love to give that a try..My SIL lives in town.. She will be back from Hawaii sometime next month.. I can run up to visit and get her to take me to the BIG CITY...LOL

Marian, send me your address for the ginger.

Kylie, I have plenty; stop looking out so much for others, and get something for yourself, lol! Isn't lemon grass wonderful and so easy to grow! I do a tea with mine sometimes.

Karyn, I am leaning more towards cardamom ginger because just read up that only the flower of the butterfly has a scent where cardamom ginger's leaves and root have a cardamom scent.

Gloria, I'll get you some. BTW, it's very easy to grow the edible ginger. Plant it where some of it is showing, i.e., don't bury the entire rhizome.

Kylie, I have an asian store here if there is anything you are looking for let me know and I'll see if they have it. Its not a huge store but there is a giant one the next town over. I just don't get over to that one often. My ginger root doesn't smell, only the flowers so maybe it is something other than butterfly.

That's one nice thing about living in the DC suburbs. You name it and we have it. lol It's such a multi-cultural region. Because of the government, the embassies, NIH, John's Hopkins, etc there's people from all over the world living nearby. The blooms of the butterfly ginger small great, nothing like ginger but the foliage does have a scent if crushed. The butterfly ginger isn't a true ginger if I'm not mistaken. Kylie if there's something you want me to pick up let me know. I'll let you know how the ginsing does. One of the roots already has a little bit of green sprouting. I'm going to start them in pots. If they grow I'll have to figure out where I can plant them. I think they like being in the woods around the base of big oak trees or something like that. Too bad I only have little ornamental flowering trees in my yard. lol

LAST CALL for ginger, will be mailing out tomorrow. I have Rigo, Carmie and Marian (and later Gloria). This ginger was i.d. as Alpinia nutans and in my search found it aka as false cardamom or dwarf cardamon.

I was going to guess cardamom. It has a very distinctive smell. Here on the Gulf coast it is not a heavy bloomer. Mine has 1 bloom shoot and one around the corner has about 4. The flowers are white with a yellow throat, very pretty, but not very fragrant or long-lived. It can grow to about 6' but usually I see it between 3-4'. Morning or evening sun, protect it in the middle of the day, it will grow in fairly deep shade. It has much smaller rhizomes than a lot of the gingers, like the alpinia zerumbut, so it is much easier to dig out.
Ya'll will enjoy this ginger. I don't think it is hardy past zone 8 but it will grow fine in a pot. Plant it along a pathway, then you can enjoy the smell as it is fragrant when you brush against it.
    Tally HO!

Hey Rigo, you are so welcome. I had hoped you would get a blast of that scent from the ginger!

I have some butterfly ginger that hasnt bloomed after 2 years. It is in pots. Do I need to move to just morning sun and not in direct sun? Any help would be gladly accepted. Thanks Judy

It might need to be divided or feed it more. It will grow here in pretty much full sun but can get sunburned if it doesn't get a little afternoon shade. Mine doesn't bloom til late fall early winter so maybe you don't have a long enough season? Maybe needs a bigger pot. I had mine in a huge pot and it was rootbound in two years.

will give some afternoon shade and see if they are root bound. Usually doesnt freeze until late oct. So should be long enough and I drag them inside so they start growing early. Thanks Judy

I have peach and white butterfly ginger in containers. The peach is in full sun, white in PM shade. Both are root bound but bloom beautifully at the end of the summer. The peach didn't bloom until the winter the first year I had it but it bloomed just fine inside. The only problem was the height, over 6'. I feed them infrequently, maybe every 6-8 weeks.
