oh, i must admit, the house is kind of dark in a lot of places, would a full spectrum bulb turned on near the plant for several hours every day do ok?

Ah, so that's a dwarf jade!
Well, now I know what type of jade my sister's working with. Her jade is so light-starved that it's hanging down over the edges of the pot.

Give it as much light as you can.

well...another reason it is not looking its best is because i accidentally broke a branch off of it once...so if it werent for that, it would look fuller.....but there are tinky buds appearing on the sides of the main stem...

JMC - Do you have a southern window you can set it in? Jades can take as much sun as you can give them. If mine start to look a little leggy, I whack them all the way back and set them on a south windowsill. The new growth starts popping out on the trunk, and with the strong light, it stays compact. With a little patience and a lot of pruning (which takes some guts the first time, I'll admit...), a Jade can be a work of art.
