Cryptanthus Petroglyphs ?

Hi all,..but especially Lisa,

This cryptanthus can be viewed on the FCBS,and is quite different and attractive.

Its a hybrid by Lisa, the parents being Lirico and Autumn.

Lisa,if you have these, I'd like to see your photo of Autumn, which is not shown on the fcbs, and also a pic of any of your current Petroglyphs ,if this be possible.

I have'nt seen these crypts listed in Michaels catalog, and was wondering if anyone knows where they might be obtained.

Bob, I don't even have the plant anymore. Larry has all of my Crypts and he is in charge of registering and releasing them for me, so I suggest you contact him. He even came up with the name for that one.

As I recall, it puts on a lot of leaves and actually forms kind of a stalk rather than blooming or pupping, so I wouldn't expect it to propagate that quickly. I could be wrong, though-- when I was there I couldn't believe how much bigger and lusher his Crypts looked than mine!

Autumn has very narrow, upright leaves, mottled and pinkish in color. It's easy to grow and prolific, and I used it in a number of crosses, but I don't have it anymore either.

    Hi Bob & Lisa (^_^) ...

Before I moved all of my plants to the new place, I got a shipment,
most of them are 27 Cryptanthus from Tropiflora and Michael's.
Among those selected want list, I got some kind of Crypt. beuckeri's hybrid,
such as 'Strawberry Shortcake', 'Pink Floyd' and 'Witches Brew'
In fact, Lisa's 'Petroglyphs' also in my want list, but they didn't have.

I've also kept on crossing my Crypt. with all the cultivars I have here.
This is one of the mothers I choose, Crypt. 'Evon'

Lisa, how do you tag your Crypt. seed pods ?
I found it's quite hard to do this with them, comparing to my Dyckias,
the pollinated Crypt's flowers are sunken and close together,
so I'm really not sure if that's the right one or not :-(

I had the same problem, Chanin. There's nothing there like a large sepal or bract to really hold the tag, so you end up just sticking it next to the flower, which is confusing. I found that the only way to avoid the confusion is to use only one pollen parent for all of the flowers within that one leaf axil. Then you can kind of wedge one big tag under the group of them.

The other problem is that you can't pull a ripe berry off and open it up the way you can with a Neo, etc. They don't come off, you just have to wait until they feel mushy and then poke them and root around in there with a pair of tweezers or some other tool and pull the seeds out one by one. The seeds are fairly large and comparatively few, so it's easy to do, but that's one more reason why it helps if all of the adjacent berries are the same cross.

Maybe someone else has a better method, but I never figured one out.

Thanks for the info Lisa.I agree with you on how large Larry's cryptanthus grow,as seen on the pics you posted after the Extravaganza. Makes my matures look like offsets.
I'll take some pics of the cryptanthus species he donated to our BBG earlier this year,as they've grown very well, and are looking colorful and healthy. We ordered some hybrids from Jim Irvin about that same time period, and they too are looking great.
About the 'stalk-look' of 'Petroglyphs',I think that may be an inherited trait from 'Lirico',and I wonder if you would agree ? Since I started this thread,I found a small photo of 'Autumn' in the Southern Exposure old catalog.
Miss that nursery with their huge selection.
    Bob

Hi Stephania...thanks for all the photos, very interesting.
I'm curious about the names of the two in the 4th photo down, the ones against the wall to the right of 'Elaine',
a mottled red/brown and the darker purple-ish one.
    Thanks,
    Bob

Thanks Lisa, that's a good idea to use one pollen parent
for all of the flowers within that one leaf axil, it's easier.

Bob, actually that's not 'Elaine' it's 'Nivea'
The mottled red/brown is 'Pink Floyd' and the darker purple is 'Witches Brew'
    then 'Strawberry Shortcake'

Chanin, you seem to get a lot of sports in Thailand, have you ever had a reverse Nivea pop up? I have one that's starting to go in that direction, but the lines are narrow and it may not be very stable. We shall see.

Bob, I used Lirico in a number of crosses, and most of them bloom and pup normally, just as the parent does, instead of continuing to grow up and up and up. However there is one other hybrid that puts on a lot of growth and is a shy bloomer, and that is Eruption (another Larry name). It has a different look, but it forms something of a stalk too. Coincidentally it also has Lirico in it, so it's possible there could be some connection there.

No, I've not Lisa, I just got that 'Nivea' two month ago.
About sport, I found this mutated 'Arlety' in a shop,
it seem plant can survive, though it lack of chlorophyll part mostly on the leaves.
