Hooray! Isn't it the most amazing thing to observe? Especially when you 'catch' it when you aren't expecting it? Ahhh...

My husband had a similar experience a few weeks ago when he was out in his Plumeria garden. Later, he came and told me about it and had me help him look for the exuvia (chrysalis shell).

I'm guessing it was just basking. Usually the ones that are newly opened are upside-down (or at least sideways) on something when they open and close their wings to pump blood into them and dry them for flight.

"I thought I saw eggs (small white dot) on some milkweed."

Here's a picture of what monarch eggs look like on milkweed, to help you figure out if that's what you have. : )
