I think May is plenty to the good,how are your "indoor" cannas doing?

Hi jim! I dugged all my indoor cannas I think last December. They're now in the basement. Weather wasn't cooperating well that time. It was always cloudy. Hopefully, they'll make it. So maybe, to make it more safe, I'll plant them June 1.

My stuttgart cannas have grown all winter but are to leggy so I cut them down today,one has a new sprout coming up just in time for spring!These are beautiful cannas,I cant wait to plant them in spring!

I live in the Springfield area. Dormant canna rhizomes should be planted at about the same time as potatos in your area. Cannas that have sprouted should only be planted out after the danger of frost is passed.

Hi William. I've never grown potatoes so am not sure when to exactly plant the rhizomes. What could be the safest date?

I live in Chicago and have grown cannas for years both in pots and in the ground.

It is my experience that starting them inside and then either transplanting them or setting them outside mid-May works best.

I have set out plants earlier. They have survived but really didn't grow and thrive. We can still have some very cool wet and rainy days in late April and in May - sometimes even into June. I have several 2 - 10 gallon pots currently huddling around windows right now. they are sending up shoots. If you start them inside now they will be tremendous earlier than if you just plant directly into the ground in a month or so. Remember it is really the soil temp that determines their growth. And although we can get some really nice and even hot days early, the soil needs to be warm for these tropicals.

What if I do this: put them in a pot then put them outside. Then in the evening, put them in the garage. Garage at night most likely will be around 40F during late April and May. Is that ok?
