The biggest thing you should be concerned with is a night time freeze. That will burn the leaves that are emerging. So if you are not expecting a freeze, go ahead and plant.

Now that being said, I wouldn't be too overly concerned. Even if there is a bit of a freeze, the emerging leaf may die, but the plant will put out more. Great plants the canna.

In San Antonio the canna die back every winter and come up in the spring. Like most places, we'll get a couple bouts of early warm weather, prior to the end of freezes. A couple leaves come up, and will be burned by the freeze. Doesn't affect the plant to much.

Cannas have nice hefty rhyzomes filled with starch. Plenty of energy to regrow later.

The day temperature here in NC is in 70s and night temperature in 50s and 40s. Probably, I will plant them in the ground this week end.

I've got over a hundred plants growing this year. I can't wait to see them get tall. The weather is finally beginning to warm here in San Antonio. I think that's what the rhyzomes look for to get going.

Good luck with you canna. I don't know if you're grown canna before, but many times, canna is a plant that you have to watch closely. If you start to see leaves eaten into, or strange colorations on the leaves, just return to this forum to figure out what to do.

Last year was my first batch. And I don't know what I was thinking, but I put up with eaten leaves all season and the canna really looked ratty.

At that time I didn't know about gardenweb, so I just cut the bad leaves out and hoped the new ones didn't suffer the same fate.

But if I only knew then, that I was probably dealing with catapillar damage, I could have easily sprayed with BT and enjoyed a fine grouping of President canna, instead of a depressing mess.

I plant my cannas early. A neat trick is to put your grass clippings on top of them. This will keep them warm. Yes, the grass will get hot.
Been doing this for 40 years.Never lost any yet!
