Fertilizing Pot Sunk in Ground

When a pot is sunk in the ground, I assume I would need to give epsom salts for the Mg at least until the roots are growing out into the soil correct? I'm imagine since I just planted it out a few weeks ago that those roots are not yet there. Leaves are showing clear signs of Mg deficiency, but I plan to make up a gallon this afternoon once a friend gets back to town. We have no local store anymore and I'm not going 40 miles just for that LOL! I have been fertilizing with 15-30-15 once a week, but plant is still growing pretty slow; I'm sure it must be a little bit of transplant shock from water to potting soil yet. I've only seen 2 new leaves grow at the main growing point, but several side shoots coming from the base up. I have been pinching those out in order to go for a standard look. Of course no Y'ing yet. We took a bit of a cool down for the last week. Night time temps dropped back down to 40-45F and days between 64-66F. Today we are starting to warm up again.

Thanks,

Vera

Vera am I reading this right....it was a cutting you rooted in water. Then potted it up and sunk it right then in the ground? I do not have lots of experience with water rooting. Nor have I ever sunk a pot in the ground yet. Only my 2nd year. But maybe it all happened to fast for the lil fellow?

If the plant is well established...I believe the temps should not make a difference.

good luck and hope it will be ok

oh I need to run in the garage and check my fertilizers...Somehow I think the middle number is suppose to be high if you want to get blooms. Otherwise for growth...the outer 2 numbers need to be high...let me go look.

24-8-16 is the regular MG all purpose fertilizer I use until the angels Y.
Then I use 10-54-10 Bloom booster.

But that is just ME...lets hear for other imput.

You need a higher nitrogen fertilizer (the 1st number) to get lots of nice green growth. I use regular MG or Peters or whatever is cheaper & then switch to bloom booster (higher middle number) after they have gotten big.

After they root in water, I plant them in cups with drainage holes until the new roots get used to the soil. I like clear plastic- reusable & I can see when the roots take off. When they look like they are growing good & putting out new leaves, then I plant them in the garden.

I rec'd the cuttings in trade....nice big healthy roots. I potted up and didn't sink the container for at least a month. What difference does it make anyway...container in the ground or container sitting above ground? It's still in a container :O

When out to take a look at it and there at least 4 new leaves coming in.
Ok I'm confused. My All Purpose MG is 15-30-15...works just fine for anything else I use it on house plants 1/4 strength. I've never found MG 24-8-16, but next time I go in I will surely look around for it. Outdoors I use compost, grass clippings, leaves, ect.

BTW I do know what the numbers refer too...I have a Hort. degree, but this is what I have right now available; some N it better than done I would suspect. It's this or MG AV Food LOL! I only go the 40 miles for big shopping 1x a month, but I believe some epsom salts right now and 15-30-15 will do for another 3 weeks.

Vera if you drilled holes in the side of the pot and covered up the bottom holes, it makes a lot of difference.

IN GROUND the roots will grow out the side holes and have more room to grow. I believe. In winter you can just cut the outer roots off and lift the pot out to store for winter time.

Happy that leaves are coming up now.

Vera I only reported what I use for fertilizing and why. different people use different strength...different brands and add a lot more. Some fertilize a lot more and other hardly as much.

Brugs just LOVE fertilizer and water.

Sometimes I use what I have available and think that it is better then nothing. Besides...it is not BAD...just that using a high middle number we safe for the time when we want the brugs to BLOOM more.

You are way ahead with having a Hort. degree. I only learned all this last year lol

Vera they love magnesium... You well actually see their leaves turn color when they are screaming for epsom salt (magnesium)... Especially the yellow colored brugs... Wintersown babies are getting big..Thanks to you all! They love compost or manure lots..:))) Good luck Barb

    Thanks!

I am just dying to see if I can find that MG 24-8-16 next time I'm in Spokane :O I'm wondering why they have two different MG fertilizers labeled as "All Purpose" with different formulas? Very weird.

    Lucy,

I am using nursery containers that have ONLY side holes. I was lucky to have a bunch in storage. When I was still a student (2004-6)we were allowed to take as many used/old containers home from time to time :)

    Barb,

Wintersown babies are taking off beautifully here and I'm almost finished planting out. My Datura inoxia had to be re-sown and now just waiting for at least first set of true-leaves before planting out :)

Vera you are so lucky with the containers! Here every once in a while I am at Lowes or Wal mart at the right time and get a few. Not even close enough for what I really need. Just spend over 100 Dollars yesterday for pots so I can re pot some brugs. Some tropical trees. Hell I do not know WHY I am growing them. WHERE am I going to put them in the winter?

I bought this HUGE Box of MG fertilzer. That has these sprayer refill packets in there. I think there should be around 10 of those in the box. Before that I bought little boxes and I could have sworn too that the numbers on those were different. I guess it is for all different needs folks have.

My neighbor ask me yesterday what that plant was that is growing wild in the middle of the tilled area I want to make another flowerbed. It is a Datura inoxia. I told her. She said, you know, when you gave the plants last year to my house for my mom to enjoy, they must have reseeded lol. She has them growing in the one bed and wants to have it more in the middle. I told here I got some left in a small nursery pot from winter sowing and will plant it for her when she goes on vacation today for a week. I told myself that no more indoor sowing with Dats. The germinate a lot better direct sown and also grow into healthier plants. From what I have been watching so far.

Can not wait till you share pictures of your beauties that make you happy
