Any canna can be a water canna. All cannas love water. The trick is to allow the canna to grow a few leaves before putting it in a pond. A bare rhizome with no leaves tends to rot when put in water. It needs the leaves to utilize the water.

Any canna can also be grown on dry land and in containers, and they are surprisingly drought tolerant.

In your zone, you'll need to bring it in for the winter. You can leave it potted and let it continue to grow as a houseplant if you'd like. It will need lots of light and not quite as much water. It may shock as you move it indoors and the leaves may turn yellow or brown. If so, just cut the stalk off and let new leaves come out.

You can also dig and store the rhizomes in a cool, dry, dark place, like a garage or basement, as you would dahlias.

The canna you are talking about is one of the finer yellow ones. The blooms are large, bright yellow with a thin white mid-rib down the center of each petal. For this reason, it is called Christ's Light. The leaves are green and yellow striped. And it grows about 3 or 4 ft tall.

It thrives in sun and heat. The hotter it gets, the faster it grows and blooms. Plant the rhizomes only a couple of inches deep. Feed it with Miracle every couple of weeks. Give it moist, yet well-drained soil. And you should have no problem.

Thank you very much. Now I know why I was finding all of the conflicting info. It's because they can be either water or dry plants. Now it makes sense. I'm going to print out your post and keep it for when I get my plant.
