Finding host plants

I don't know if anybody actually knows this or not, but it's something I've been wondering from time to time. How do egg-laying butterflies find host plants? Do they just happen upon them by chance, or do they have some kind of instinct that helps them locate the plants.

I've also had that same question about caterpillars who run out of food and have to wander off searching for more (I've witnessed such a situation before, and it was rather heart-wrenching).
