I'm in Toronto, z6 and a friend in Bowmanville Ont.z5 are both growing, Aristolochia elegans, dutchman's pipe,it attracts swallowtails. Climbing Hydrangea, I haven't tried. Rai

I don't think hydrangeas attract butterflies, and I don't know if Dutchman's Pipe does. They sure get bizarre-looking 'flowers' though!

Do you have your DP growing on a trellis ? Does it die back each winter or does it grow to a great height in your zone ?

I have never known Dutchman's Pipe to attract butterflies, moths, birds just flies. I do have it here because I love the leaves and the fact that it grows in shade. It dies back each year and then comes up again in the spring.

I though the pipes would attract hummingbirds but I may be wrong. Climbing hydrangeas would take years to bloom and I haven't known them to attract butterflies.

Well I went and got one this AM. It is called Aristolochia Durior and has small white pipe shaped flowers. The info on Google says the butterflies love it...and that's good. I planted it where it can climb up a large tree and I hope it does well there in the half shade spot.
Thanks for the info :))

That must be a different version of Dutchman's Pipe than I have. My flowers are green, but definitely a similar shape. We had them when we were young as well, and they were always green, that I can recall. White sounds really cool. I'll have to look into that one. Thanks for the tip.

My neighbours have a hardy maroon flowering one...and I have seedlings for a tropical one - am hoping for the bigger flowers. I had one when I lived overseas and it had the maroon and white dappled pipes the size of dinner plates. I'll have extras of these seedlings, BTW, for the fall swap, but they need to overwinter indoors.

The Ducthman's Pipevine (Aristolochia durior) will host the beautiful Pipevine Swallowtail, that is, if you live in it's range.
