I tend to be fairly lazy when it comes to fertilizing. I've never used Miracle Gro, however. I'm lucky in that my cannas are inground all year long and I don't have to dig them up yearly.

In the Fall I mulch with shredded leaves, which breaks down during the Winter months and not only feeds the soil and worms, but the rhizomes as well. In the Spring I just toss a few handfulls of a general granular fertilizer around the bases and water it in really well. I rarely, if ever, dig it in before watering. Every year I have the most gorgeous and healthy cannas. Unless I'm trying to empty out a bag of fertilizer, that's the only fertilizing that I do all year long.

My cannas love MiracleGro. They also love having some time release granular fertilizer like Osmocate worked into the soil at the beginning of the season too.
