should i remove leaves from my Canna that are brown and mostly eaten by japanese beetles? i hand pick the beetles off several times a day, but they have done damage to several leaves.

Hello! I am new to cannas and new to California. I know to take off the dead (brown wilted) blooms, I just wasn't sure about the bulbous parts of the plant underneath the dead growth. Anyway, I did find this at gardenweb.com. It answers my question and hopefully yours:

I just moved into a new home. There are 25 or 30 cannas with dead blooms. How far down do I clip them and will they bloom again?

Cut the stalks down to the ground. Then fertilize and keep them watered and you should see new growth.

So there you have it. Now if I can find my hand pruners that I moved from Michigan I'll be in good shape!
