None can survive the rhizome freezing. Some however are more tolerant of cold damp soil than others. I doubt you can overwinter them outdoors in your zone unless they're near a foundation. I do know some people even here in zone 5/6 that can leave them in the ground so long as they are right against the warmth of the house foundation.

I have red cannas that I think are the President & have a friend who has a tall yellow one, no idea of the name, that seem to survive fine. I lost a few of mine several years ago when we had an ice storm that hung around quite a while, but not all died even then.

I just moved to NC zone 7 from NJ and had cannas everywhere !!ALL colors leaves and flowers. Waited til the frost hit them then dug and put in basement. Brought some here are doing fine.
