I used to grow cannas in England. Like you I hated to cut them down (or let the frost kill them) so I used to dig them up and put them in large pots round our offices at work. One or two even flowered - the ones in the sunniest positions. Everyone commented on them and said how nice they looked.In spring I used to give cuttings to people I thought had done a good job! Watch out for spider mites, however, if you grow them indoors.

I would cut them down and store. A good long winter rest does a canna good. Yes, you probably had them in too shady of a spot.

Where should I store in OH? I have a crawl space area in my basement, but it stays fairly warm in my basement. The garage will freeze (pop will freeze a little if left out)so is that too cold?

My vote is to grow those canna seedlings in a sunny window in that pot! I've been doing that with 2 or 3 cultivars every year - and the next growing season they are the first to bloom.
I haven't noticed any lack of vigor in those plants from having spent a warm, lazy, colorful Winter in the house.
I've also found that the dormant canna rhizomes need a dark 40-50 degree storage area and enough moisture in their packing material (peat moss is perfect) to keep from drying out.
