A Silver Lining

I guess that freaky storm was good in a way. I discovered about a half dozen more brugs, 1 citrus tree and 3 plumerias that I didn't know were there. We've been getting enough rain that they hadn't dried out. They haven't been fed but look pretty darn good considering that they haven't been seen in about 2 months. These weren't small plants. The plumies were in 10 & 15" pots. The citrus was in a 10" and some of the brugs were in 20" pots. The brugs weren't very tall, maybe 2' and kind of tucked behind the bar and hidden by other plants and supplies. I was really excited about one of the plumies, Emerson's Pink Nova, that I thought I'd lost last winter. There's just too much stuff cluttering up my deck.

I'm glad you had some good out of that wind. Sounds like you need a secretary to help you catalog all your plants.

You certainly have my interest now. How many plants do you have on your deck?

Warren I have way too many. lol Well over 400 container plants. At least I have a really big deck. The change of season brings on anxiety attacks because I know I have to move the plants either in or out. We put a couple greenhouses in the back yard this year but in the past I've always used the greenhouses at our farm or the grow room we converted in the house. I'm hoping to have to keep very few plants in the house this winter. I dislike having plants inside. That sounds odd for someone who loves plants. lol

Over 400??!! Holy cow! I really should get my wife to read this. She gets upset when I decide to start another flowerbed. I've very quietly started a couple of beds in the past month or so without saying anything, and so far, she hasn't noticed. (We have a fairly large yard, she's not being dippy) And I started up a few shade plants under our Magnolia that she hasn't spotted yet.
Up until now, I've been strictly perrenials. If I end up liking the brugmansia's and start expanding from there, I think she may start refering to my flowerbeds as the "good old days".
How much time per day do you end up dedicating to keeping that many pots growing?
Oh, I'm guessing that you've got most of the mess in the backyard cleaned up? Replaced the glass top table with a wooden top?

Wow Karyn! good for you! And they are alive and happy, what a nice surprise!
See, mother nature was telling you with that wind not to forget her babies that were tucked away, lol.

Warren, I too tried to be strictly perennials till last year, then I discovered dats & brugs..now I am so royally, u know what, lol. I'm not going to have to bring in nearly as many plants as Karyn does, but I have a tiny house & no GH, and my family was NOT happy over the winter with all my seeds & cuttings, and just a few plants I was trying to keep alive over the winter that I had going. Wait till this year when I bring in big plants, lol. Same here with the beds as well. Everyone complains..they see me with a shovel and they are not happy. Trying to sneak enlarging a bed so no one notices, lol..having to hide it like we're doing ssomething bad, lol. Truely is an addiction.
I have alot more flower bed space this year than last..so weird to look at pics and see how much of the grass part of the yard is gone now. Anyway, DH isn't one to give compliments, and has always complained about my flowers..but this year I guess he likes it :). He even went & dug up some native plants for me he thought I would like.
A week and a half ago his uncle passed, we had out of state company, and I heard him saying "you've got to see her garden and the pond" & "o just wait till the lights come on at night!" That made me happy. Took 4 years for him to like it, but he finally does..not that he'll ever admit it to ME! lmao!

Lol, Daniella. I know how you feel. Hubby sneaks out and looks at the flowers and admires them and now has taken over the evening watering in the back and is even putting up with getting eaten alive by the skeeters. I know how Karyn feels too. I find plants hidden places too and they were doing well so I left them where they were, lol. I'm glad hubby is liking taking care of the plants since I just found out I have to have another neck surgery and he will have to take care of everything. I'm going to try and put it off til fall when they don't need as much care. I really hope most of them are big enough to either leave in the ground or let them go dormant this winter. I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm so depressed over this. If I don't have the surgery they said I will lose use of my left arm totally. I have another MRI saturday but don't see the surgeon til next month unless they get an opening. The neurologist said the two surgeries they did on C6 didn't fix the nerve problem and I have new nerve damage from C8 affecting my hand. I had so hoped to be able to do my own digging by the fall at least. This sucks.

My yard is too small to loose anything in. I really need to rearrange my plants there are so many on my patio you can hardly sit down. My biggest problem is I planted some seeds and now I am not sure what is seed and what is weeds!!!! My family shakes at the thought when I say something about new plant. They all laughed when I had to buy a carry on bag at the airport when I came home from Florida because my suitecase was too heavy (by the way they all made it home just fine!) My Bf just about had a cow when he found out what I paid for 2 plumeria cuttings, didn't have the heart to tell him I bought cheap ones!!!

I'm not some weirdo like the little old lady with thousands of cats. lol Plants are our livelyhood. DH has been in the wholesale cut flower/plant business for almost 40 years and we also have a small farm where we grow mainly flowers for cutting as a side business. I was always interested in plants and when DH and I got together it just made it much easier for me to acquire stuff. I wasn't in the plant business. I was an orthopedic PA but decided to take a leave of abscense in 2000 that somehow continued. lol I do spend quite a bit of time on the plants, at least a couple hrs a day and if I was still working outside the home wouldn't have so many plants but I have the time now. I just ignore my kids. lol (just kidding, well kind of : ))

Kristy sorry to hear that you need another surgery. I'd still go for another opinion. I went to 4 other surgeons after I was told that I needed more surgery until I found someone that came up with another treatment plan. It might only be temporary but I'm holding off on anymore spine surgery until absolutely necessary. BTW there's no such thing as vertebral C-8. Are you sure he didn't mean C7-T1 and cranial nerve C-8 is the auditory/balance nerve they wouldn't be messing with that. Don't ask how I remember such obscure stuff but can't remember some of the basics. lol Whatever you end up doing I hope it works this time. I know how much discomfort you are in. It makes it next to impossible to concentrate on anything else.

Karyn, How lucky you are. Finding new plants without having to buy them or go shopping. LOL I am happy they turned out ok. I need to get outside and look through some of mine now. I actually have lot's of tranplanting that needs to be done.

Warren, you know what they say about "hiding" things right? LOL Welcome to the obsession!

Kristy, sorry about your neck problems. Hope it can be treated without another surgery.

Daniella, it sounds like you are winning your hubby over. My DH has no idea that I have already filled the greenhouse he has promised, but not built yet.LOL He still doesn't want me to move the plants back to their normal home since our rafting trip.

I am pretty sure he said C6 and C8 this is what I found when I looked it up and this is what problems I am having so makes sense to me, lol. Maybe its the same thing? Actually the T1 descibes more what it feels like. I can grasp things but its getting weaker and I have a hard time holding onto things without dropping them. I am getting a second opinion. I am not liking the idea that he has done 2 surgeries already and I still have the same problem.

C8-T1: Extensor Digitorum Communis (straightening the knuckles)
Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (clenching a fist)
Opponens Pollicis (Thumb touching little finger)
Interrosei or Intrinsics (Spreading or drawing together the fingers)

At the C8 level sensation is present in the hand and all the fingers except the little finger, but grasp is still not possible. It is possible to correct this problem with a surgery that will allow an individual the ability to grasp with the hands, increasing independence.

At the T1 level the individual cannot spread or draw together the fingers but is capable of a weak grasp and dexterity is poor. Surgical approaches can also improve hand function at this level.

Karyn, that was a nice find! If I ever find any plants buried under other plants, they are usually so thin and weak.

Kristy, glad you are getting a second opinion and hopefully with better results.

Karyn, I cant imagine having 400 potted plants, but sounds like a lot of fun AND alot of work ! I am so glad you found something good out of the storm !

Kristy, I am sorry to hear that you suffer with nerve pain, as I do also, and somedays I feel I cant see thru the pain. I am so glad you are getting a second opinion ! The best thing that has happened for me, is going to a chiropractor, but I do have to say It took some time to find a good one ! I couldnt walk, or feel my legs and arms when I started, and now things are better. Ill have trouble the rest of my life, but it is so much more bearable now. I wish you the best with getting some releif !

Sorry Karyn. Didn't mean to hijack your thread. Thanks for the well wishes and I hope I get some good news from one of them. I'm glad you found some relief F4E. I have not been happy with the chiropractors I had been using but do have a lady that I get massages from when I can afford to go or trade work that helps tremendously. Email me if you want more info about that. Sorry about the off topic again.

Kristy your insurance should cover a massage therapist as long as they are certified. Mine's covered I just don't feel like going. It feels great but doesn't have any lasting effect for me and it's just too time consuming. Check and see what your plan covers. You might also want to get a letter of medical necessity from your physician. You might have to fight with your ins co but if it helps there's no reason you shouldn't be able to go as often as needed and have it covered. It's terribly expensive out of pocket.

They only cover it in conjuction with physical therapy and will only do that if you are trying to prevent surgery or just had it. They half way rub you for 15 minutes and give you a 15 minute workout and charge you a $12 copay, lol. Not worth it. The lady I use has been to all sorts of schools and has her own business. She uses a combination of techniques that I have never found anyone else that does them all and she just has the touch. She always seems to know what is making something else hurt. Most people you say your back hurts they rub your back but she would go straight to another part like my feet or neck and use pressure points and deep massage and sure enough it would hurt sometimes when she did it but it would help me for a couple of weeks afterward. She is moving at the end of next month so I need to get in a couple more before she leaves. Yes I know its very expensive and no way could I afford to go often enough to be helpful if John didn't trade her work on her car for massages. I hope she comes back to visit her brother often, lol. Other places I went and got massages were just that only a rub and only felt good while they were doing it, lol. John can do that for free, lol.

That's a shame. Sometimes ins co's make no sense, especially when it comes to preventative care. Wouldn't it be more cost effective for them to cover a proper massage therapist then send you straight to surgery? They always seem willing to send you for cutting. It drives me nuts! At least you are able to barter with her. How far away is she moving? Maybe she could recommend someone? After all pretty much everyone needs auto maintenance.

She is moving to Houston but she says she has a friend that has much of the same background but she has a brand new car boo hoo. Her son however has an older car so maybe we can work out something if she has to help him with his. She is even more expensive than my friend at $75 an hour. I have learned some things I can do myself by using tennis balls and a pool noodle and laying on them and rolling around, lol. It helps some if I do it a lot and don't let it get too bad first. How are you plumies? The year I almost lost mine to freeze they bloomed even better and are really doing well this year. I don't normally get blooms til fall and all of them are budding out. Its making me want to get more colors, lol. I want one of the mixed color ones like a rainbow. All mine are either pink, white, yellow or red. Nothing unusual but the red one has petals just like a deep red rose and smells just like one. I have to do something with that one. Its not going to fit in the house this winter with the long side shoot it grew. I hate to cut it off because that horizontal branch is the heaviest blooming one, lol.

I was really feeling silly about my deck with 180 pots everyone calls it a jungle, but you make me feel normal.

Of course we are normal. It's everyone else that's a screwball! lol

I resemble that remark, lol. I don't know what it is with me and pots. I can't seem to get rid of them, lol. I feel like I can control things better with pots sometimes. I am like the little old lady in the shoe with pots of plants instead, lol.
