I have been very fortunate to grow cannas here. Mine get to be 6 feet tall by October and I don't dig them up. They are however sheltered from the winter because they are surrounded by hedges and they love full sun. I periodically spray them with liquid sevin to keep the bugs from eating the leaves, other than that mine do fine. It's about the only thing that I have been able to grow.I will say that voles don't seem to bother them and they really do multiply rapidly. I am in a rural area surrounded by woods so yes I do have voles. But to help keep them under control I just soak mice or rat bait pellets in apple juice and then shove 1/4 spoonful of the pellets deep down into the vole holes with a screw driver every few weeks. I take special care not to leave any pellets out where scquirrels or birds may eat them.

No vole damage on cannas here in Newport News, VA, although they do occasionally eat other things. Some leaf roller damage occasionally - I just cut down the stalks and the plants rejuvenate themselves. All species and hybrids are reliably hardy here left in the ground over winter, with a little mulch if I think about it.

Actually they do eat cannas. Usually they will chew the stalk off right above the roots. I even had the canna planted in permatill and didn't stop them at all. So frustrating.

Some other plants I've lost to voles recently are clematis, phlox and tree dahlias.
