Cannas are for the most part, tropical or subtropical plants and in their native setting typically did not need frost to continue their growth the next season. In the same sense, they were not subjected to long term storage as we have in many areas where they are now grown. Basically the primary consideration seems to be the onset of the frost season aids in the conversion of the sugars produced a then converted to carbohydrates stored in the rhizome. This seems to help reduce rhizome rot in long term storage.

You cannot change the harvest time now so simply provide the best storage condition possible. Assuming the rhizomes survive they will be good to grow next spring.

I would recommend not dividing the rhizomes any more that necessary, keep cool and prevent moisture loss as much as possible. With this in mind, you can just store in the basement or pot them up for storage. You may want to try both to see which works best for you.

Thanks you. I will take your advise and try one in pot and one in newspaper in the basement. Hoping the potting works better since I have more time to do that now than I will in spring.
