If your canna leaves were actually rolled and stitched together, you were infected with the lesser canna leaf roller as opposed to the greater canna leaf roller. Do a search to get more details.

Prevention is the most effective solution and the use of a systemic insecticide is extremely effective; consider Orthene.

Because of your location, the leaf rollers do not typically survive the cold winters but migrate south to north as the season progresses. They can/will infect any canna if/or when they arrive. They typically do not overwinter on or in the stored rhizome.

The leaves were totally rolled but only on this one canna. How and when do you apply the Orthene? This particular canna was left in the garden over winter and it overwintered fine with no protection which surprised me.

You must have a very special location for your canna to survive your winters. The leaf roller control in your area normally need not begin until late June or early July most seasons; as opposed to our southeastern gardeners where the leaf roller moths (larvae) survive or arrive early spring.

Orthene is best applied as a liquid sprayed on the leaves where it can translocate within the entire plant. Most gardeners begin a spray program âÂÂaccording to instruction on the labelâ after some leaf development or after the first sign of infestation.

Please consider spraying when beneficial insects are least active or present.
