what to look for with rotted rhizomes?

I finally pulled my cannas today. It should be way too late. We have had stretches of temps down to the 20's, and the ground has been frozen. It warmed up for a couple of days and I got industrious. The rhizomes look great, but the stalks that attach to the rhizome are spongy. If I am going to have rot will it be from the stalk to the rhizome, or just start somewhere on the rhizome?

cut off all of the stems as close as you can to the rhizome. Let them dry a day or two inside and then store cool.

I have never used any chemicals or fungicides/dips and never had much of a problem. Just get rid of those stems!

You could have rot from the stem or rhizome, but more likely from old stems, and if you keep the rhizome wet.

I would store them in DRY promix or the like in cool (45-60) temps

I'm having some problems with my rhizomes in the basement. You mentioned

ut off all of the stems as close as you can to the rhizome.

I cut mine and left about 1 to 2 inches of stem. Could that cause the drying up of the rhizomes?
