digging up cannas and cutting them back

After the last couple of nights with temp in the 20s, my cannas are now looking unsightly.

During the summer, they had taken over my entire flower bed. I have been waiting to dig then up and plant them else where.

The question is: when do I do that? Should I pull up the rhizomes now, and store them? Or should I just cut them back and pull them up in Spring?

Please advise.Thank you.

Hi Meg, I would wait until the spring to dig, divide, and plant. If the canna leaves look brown and ugly then cut them down to the ground. HTH, Tara

I moved here 2 years ago& dug my cannas up in zone 7 Texas and moved 3 hours.they sat in 5 gallon buckets for about a month before dumped water out and planted them.was probably mid febuary when I planted them back out& about this week here when dug up for the move.Cannas are pretty tough.i do recomend hoseing off when digging to transplant.was a mess cleaning them so could divide as planted back out...out of buckets with muddy water,but them toughs babys
