Cool nights!

Hello all,

Sunday, here in NW Indiana, we were humid and 101 F, but since then we had a storm come through.

Yesterday our high was 72 F and our low was 52 F last night and 61 F the night before. We are to drop into the 50's again tonight and tomorrow night. With lows in the mid 60's through Monday with highs in the mid 80's.

So, since cool nights are what sets the buds in brugmansia for heavy blooming, I am expecting a flower explosion about 3 weeks from now on my monster brugs!

I would expect anyone in the Mid-West area with a string of 4-5 cool nights should expect the same!

You think that's cool, someone just posted that in MN, it's down in the 30's at night already!

    BRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, up in the Iron Range in Minnesota and especially in the International Falls area gets really cold.

It is my understanding that near International Falls, you can still Homestead 5 acres and it is yours...of course you have to survive Winter temps that drop below -50 F!

-50F, no thanks, not even for 100 acres! I'm thinking more like Costa Rica, Panama, maybe Belize instead. Now there you could grow a proper Brug! PF

    LOL!!!

Ahhhh, so that is why I am seeing so many buds on my very reluctant pink brug! I should have an explosion in just a couple of weeks... cool!!!

    Hi Shiollie,

Yes, in a few weeks, you will be very impressed and very happy!

A low of 52 in Indiana! Wow, I grew up in Michigan, but don't remember it getting that cold in the summer. Am I reading something wrong? I don't know what our lows are here in CA lately, but my Angels aren't blooming anymore :(
Is it worth fertilizing, or should I wait until the temps get lower - and what is "lower?"

I've been planting baby angels all over the yard this summer - guess I might have to wait until Oct to see many blossoms.

At least I won't beat myself up trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong!

Well my frosty is loaded with over 50 buds& I KNOW TX didn't have no cooler temps to set um.could have been the epson salts though...lol

I would not want to live somewhere where the temps could be -50.I've felt windchill of -48 and THAT was bad enough.(I believe that was the year my contact froze in my eye)I really enjoy not endureing those cold temps anymore& like christmas shopping in shorts& not freezeing while hanging the christmas lights, not to mention the SHORT grow season I'd have.I'll live with hot& steamy& crank my AC up.

    Hello ShannonCA,

They said some areas set a record low as the record was 52 F. It felt nice and crisp in the house that morning with all the windows open!

Yes, I believe this is a good time to be fertilizing for you as when it goes to bud, it will already have absorbed the nutrients it needs. Of course, with brugs and plumeria, they like fertilizer as long as they are not dormant.

By lower temps or cooler nights, I seems to have flower flushes a few weeks after we get a few nights in the 60's or cooler.

You may have to wait a while until Summer out there cools off some.

    Hello enjoynit,

I find some plants just seem to like to flower, currently, my one white is currently in flower again, about 60 flowers. My gold has about a dozen. However, my other white, my pink, and my variegated have none. Although I can now see bunches of buds from the recent cool weather.

No, -50 F would be too much for me as well.

We usually see some -10 F to -20 F here in NW Indiana, but nothing like when I lived near Minneapolis. Personally, I do not mind the snow, but the sub 0 weather bothers me. Main problem here is that it is gray and cloudy a lot in the Winter whereas in Minnesota, even though it can be very cold, at least you have bright blue sunny skies most of the time.

We are to hit 91 F again today and humid, low will be 66 F. And 93 F for highs the next two days.

You know, you can do your Christmas shopping in shorts here...in fact, it will save you money on buying blus colored nylons or tights...LOL!

My large pink is just finishing up a flush of 5 or 6 dozen flowers. The rest of my plants have an incredible amount of buds forming on them due to another spell of cooler nights we are experiencing.

Anyone else with cooler nights noticing lots of buds forming?

It's happening down here, also. I just poured on more fertilizer.

Well I live in the part of the US that has the largest weather extremes. We get high 90's al lsummer, and I have seen 55 below and wind chills of 65 below. I envy those who live where you can heat your green houses in the winter, i just would not happen here. My brugs will be safely tucked in my house be it as cuiings in buckets, or in a cool basement.

We have however had a record hot summer, and so far September has been wonderful. My brugs are just loaded and have been most of the summer, My EP is about to come into it's 6th flush. I give them a good head start in a greenhouse from April till it is time to go outside. I do keep some in my house under lights. they are a very welcome sight when the temps dip into those sub zero temps. I have a house full of plants, this way I can garden all winter.

My, Oh my!!! I didn't know all of this stuff about new buds forming with cooler nights!!! Mine are still growing like mad & they just dropped the last flush a week ago. Now just maybe...just maybe...I'll get another flush. Gotta go pour on some more food :)

Oh yes, the cooler nights are bringing out the best in my Brugs. Below is a picture of 'my monster' Charles Grimaldi a couple of evenings ago.
He is probably close to 12 ft tall, trained as a tree, and still growing.

I'm on the verge of another flush here also. This weekend is our local festival with lots of guests to the house n garden so I'm hoping I'm not caught between flowerings but think Dr. Seuss, Jean Pasco, Milk n Honey, and EP will all be coming into flower. Its such fun to have friends compare he different fragrances. I had despaired of snowbank flowering this year but it also has just put out a number of pretty striped buds which are fun to watch develop due to their patterning. Good luck all on your fall flowers.

I am also on the verge of another flower flush.

My gold is 10-11 feet tall and has 300+ buds and my variegated is 6 feet tall and has 200+ buds.

    Beautiful, wildcat. Beautiful.

oh my......... those are just beautiful, Wildcat!

    Is your variegated a Maya?

    Carol

    Hello Jroot and IceGardens,

Thank you for the nice compliments. I need a better digital camera.

I do not know what type variegated this is. Two years ago a lady came by and admired my other AT's and Plumeria. She said she was given a variegated AT as a gift. Asked if I'd like a cutting the the next week brough1 me a 12" branch.

I wish people could see these in person! And smell them too!

Just lovely, Wildcat! I can almost smell them all the way to Kansas! Very gorgeous plants. I vote to keep this nice fall weather, year round! (no cutting, or lugging to basement)

Wildcat, I have Maya, will get a picture of the leaves and the bloom (which is a pale peach color) and post them soon.

Holy crow Wildcat_IN_Z5, those are HUGE flushes you have coming, be sure to post Pics of them in bloom! ( a large fan placed on their south side, blowing northerly would also be nice ;-).

We have another month to go before they start setting buds, but it's worth the wait. They usually bloom from November through March, then it gets too hot.

WOW!!! Wildcat, I am also in NW IN! And VERY new to Brugs. I just purchased my first one, last Thursday. It is a Maya, and I LOVE IT!!! What do you do with your monsters over winter??? I have SO much to learn!!!!

    Hello Deb118,

Both are in full bloom tonight.

If you would like to see them, please e-mail me your e-mail address and number ASAP and I will give you my address & number so you can come an see them. Tomorrow night they will be Incredible too...and my pink and white will be in full bloom tomorrow as well.

You ought to come by and see them!!! You won't see anything like this in NW Indiana except at my house.

AND, I'll give you cuttings from all too!

I'd really like someone from this site to see them in person as they are unreal! And my digital camera bites.

    Wildcat,
I live in Muncie,IN and I want to know, how are you keeping these over winter? This is my first year with brugs, I grow bananas mostly and other tropicals, I have a heated 10X20 greenhouse. My brugs are mostly in pots, I did direct plant a couple this spring, but WOW, yours look great!!! I have a charles grimaldi, and some unknowns from a trade. You obviously have the "secret overwintering method" down to a science! I can keep tropicals alive and grow, but these brugs seem a little difficult to me.

    Here is a link that might be useful: {{gwi:420973}}

    Hi Sandy,

I whack them back to about 5 feet tall and put them in a greenhouse for the Winter. See my post, "Picture of my white Brug".

Brugs are easy, you almost can't kill them.

Wildcat What are you feeding yours?? Mine are all just sitting..In August Camille put on a flush and so did Canary and then Canary got sick.. I think fertilizing in temps over 100 was too much..I was giving them 10-52-10 once a week and fish emolsion daily...I stopped and have just now gone back to feeding since we are in the 90's..They are just starting to look half way alive again.. Except for my old Frosty he is strong as an ox and keeps on going..
Yours are what I want mine to be...
    Thanks

    Hi Ronda,

This year I switch to using only the powder stuff that you put 1.25 lbs. in a hose application sprayer. I give each plant 3 minutes ~ 15 gallons fertilizer weekly. You cannot over fertilize them with this method.

We have had several spells of night in the 50's since late July...although right now we are experiencing a little heat wave.

NW Indiana is currenly 10 inches under it's average rainfall since April/May. Very very dry. Lately, I have been watering my brugs everyday with the hose 7-10 minutes (35-50 gallons) each and they still wilt in this 90 degree sunny weather.

Since you are in East Texas, I am sure the heat is what has them in kind of a Summer dormancy. Keep watering and fertilizing thoroughly.

I think you will get what you desire when the weather cools of there in mid-October.

Are your's in the ground? Mine are.

    Wildcat

Yes mine are all in ground. I am hoping year two will be much better. The Frosty Pink will have been in the ground 2 years and he is a monster.. Just not a lot of flushes this year. This has been a very hot and dry summer for them. I am hoping they will all take off and bloom before frost..I still have until the middle of Nov. So they have time..Thanks for the help..Yours are just awesome..I am determined mine will look like your someday..
    Thanks
    Ronda

    Rhonda,

I am sure by mid-October you will have more brug flowers than you'll know what to do with!
