hello, a question, and advice

The messages seem to point to the fact that everyone on this page has more gardening knowledge in their little pinkies than I have, entirely. My name is Mike. How do?

I learned something yesterday, and I thought I'd share in case anyone didn't know it. I had a whole pile of pressure treated lumber I was going to use to build a raised bed garden. I thought, "Gotta use treated lumber so it doesn't rot, right?"

Wrong. Apparently, they use carcinogens when pressure treating. You don't want to eat the veggies. An MA in landscape architecture told me this.

Then she gave me some more advice: Use bales of straw (not hay -straw is cheaper) around the raised bed instead of wooden walls. You can sit on it while you work, which is nice for my back, and at the end of the season, you can take off the twine, kick it over the soil, and just till it in next season. I thought, "Sit and garden? Niiiice."

So, the question. Where is the best place to get CHEAP bales of straw in Raleigh?

Here is bonus: Try planting seedlings IN the bale of straw if you're feeling adventurous. Just water 'em down, and away they go.

I just bought my first house, I'm 26, and I can't wait to grow some edibles. Feel free to get in touch; I'm learning fast, but I could use all the help I can get.

Anyone around Raleigh need any 5 gallon buckets? I have a contact.
