Is it hopeless to expect clematis to do well next to arborvitae?

I have yet to have any luck with clematis, tho I would love to get them going. I'd like it on the chain link fence tho the neighbors, on both sides, have huge hedges...are we walled in or they are walled out..hmm..

If you have ideas, we are zone 7, on a lake, acid soil where huckleberries, salal, rhodies do well. Medium bank, mostly terraced, sun from 10 to 3. I am a perennial nut....cottage style.... Roses do well, maples, hydrangeas, hostas, hardy gerainiums. etc. My bigist problem is drainage and maybe dampness... a lake in the northwest should sum that up.

Do you like clematic has a chance?
