Ann, like any plant, the clematis vines will grow towards the sun due to phototropism but you will get flowers all over. Clematis are not like sunflowers whose flowers tend to follow the direction of the sun, at least that is the experience I have had in my garden.

As to which type would do better, I personally would go with the flower shape you prefer. What has been shown here on this forum time and time again is that one's results with any clematis are going to depend on too many factors to be able to guarantee which would do best in your garden.

Hi Ann, I have all types of clematis in my garden but most of them are the type II or type III. I have them planted in every kind of exposure and Miquel is right, they will bloom all over. All of the types have (so far) done well in my garden. As you know, that could change at any minute. I think you would love the look of them mixed with your roses and you will keep finding more and more places to grow them. They are as addicting as roses. I have them with every rose, growing up the poles the birdhouses are on, on obelisks in the middle of the beds....I keep shoving more into the garden :-). Two that I know you would love with the bell shaped blooms are Betty Corning, a vigorous clematis with fragrance and Rooguchi but the big flowered ones are beautiful as well. I love all of them.
